Chapter 11 - THE BLUEBIRD’S SONG

Six months later.

The spring air was sweet with the smell of blooming lilac bushes lining the porch of the farmhouse.

I stood in the kitchen, wearing a pair of worn denim overalls, my hands covered in flour. I was kneading dough on the butcher block counter, a skill I had picked up to pass the quiet, peaceful days.

The back door swung open, and Luca walked in. He was wearing jeans and a simple white t-shirt, carrying a wooden crate filled with fresh tomatoes from the garden we had planted together. He looked tanned, healthy, and incredibly handsome.

“Delivery for the prettiest baker in Colorado,” Luca smiled, setting the crate on the table.

“Flattery will get you a fresh biscuit, Mr. Moretti,” I teased, wiping my forehead with the back of my flour-covered hand.

He walked over, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder. “I don't need biscuits. I already have everything I want.”

Answer One: Luca and Caroline have fully adapted to a normal, quiet life, finding joy in simple, domestic peace.

He kissed my cheek, leaving a smudge of dirt against the flour.

“Your mother called while you were outside,” I said, turning in his arms.

Luca’s face softened. “How is Vanessa doing?”

“She sounds good,” I smiled. “She’s taking painting classes in the facility. She asked if we could come visit next month. She said she painted something for you.”

“We’ll go,” Luca nodded, a profound peace settling over him.

The phone on the kitchen wall rang loudly, breaking the quiet afternoon.

I wiped my hands on a towel and answered it. “Hello?”

“Caroline Hayes?” a crisp, professional voice asked.

“Yes, speaking.”

“This is Dean Miller from the Chicago College of Nursing. We reviewed your re-application and the glowing letters of recommendation from the federal medical team that treated your mother.”

My heart skipped a beat. I looked at Luca, who was watching me with an encouraging smile.

“Yes?” I breathed.

“We would be honored to offer you a full scholarship to finish your degree, starting this fall,” the Dean said warmly.

Reversal: The life I thought I had lost when Vanessa humiliated me in the dining room wasn't gone. It had just been waiting for me to reclaim it.

Tears of pure joy sprang to my eyes. “Yes! Thank you. Thank you so much, Dean Miller. I accept.”

I hung up the phone and threw myself into Luca’s arms, laughing and crying at the same time.

“I got in!” I cheered. “I’m going back to nursing school!”

Luca spun me around in the kitchen, his laughter echoing off the wooden beams. “I knew you would. I never doubted it for a second.”

He set me down, his hands resting gently on my cheeks. He looked deeply into my eyes, all the love in the world shining in his dark gaze.

“I have something for you too,” Luca said softly.

He reached into the pocket of his jeans.

He didn't pull out a brass key, or a ledger, or a weapon.

He pulled out a simple, elegant velvet box.

He dropped to one knee on the flour-dusted hardwood floor.

“Caroline,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “You saved me from a life of darkness. You gave me a home, a family, and a reason to wake up every morning and be a better man. Will you marry me?”
