Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER I NEVER KNEW

The cold steel of Vanessa's gun remained perfectly steady, aimed directly at my heart.
My mind spun violently, rejecting the words on the page. My mother, Sarah Hayes, a quiet, hardworking nurse who clipped coupons and worried about the electric bill, had taken three million dollars from a mafia boss? And she had hidden a child?
“You’re lying,” I choked out, stepping backward. “I’m an only child. I grew up alone with my mother. There was never a boy in our house.”
“The ledger doesn’t lie!” Vanessa screamed, the polished socialite entirely replaced by a desperate, feral mother. “Antonio transferred the funds to a trust in her name twenty years ago. The date perfectly matches the day my son was taken from the orphanage.”
Answer One: My mother didn't just work at the hospice; she had been entangled with the Moretti family for two decades, hiding a massive secret.
“I don’t know anything about a boy!” I pleaded, tears blurring my vision.
Vanessa cocked the hammer of her gun. “Then you’re useless to me.”
She raised the weapon. I squeezed my eyes shut, my hand desperately gripping the heavy gun in my coat pocket.
Suddenly, a deafening explosion shattered the silence of the warehouse.
The skylight above us shattered inward. Glass rained down like diamond dust in the moonlight.
Before Vanessa’s men could raise their weapons, a dark figure dropped from the rafters. It was Luca.
He didn’t shoot. He moved with terrifying, brutal precision. He landed directly on the first Russian guard, driving his knee into the man’s chest and knocking him unconscious instantly. The second guard raised an assault rifle, but Luca swept his leg out, sending the man crashing into the side of the SUV.
Vanessa stumbled back, aiming her gun at Luca.
“Don’t move!” she shrieked.
Luca stood slowly, wiping a smear of blood from his cheek. He didn’t look at her gun. He looked at the ledger in her hand.
“You didn’t read the whole page, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice a low, lethal rumble.
Vanessa blinked, confused.
Open Two: What else was written in Antonio’s ledger that Vanessa missed in her panic?
“Caroline’s mother didn’t keep the boy,” Luca explained, stepping between me and the barrel of Vanessa’s gun. “My father paid Sarah Hayes to forge the medical records. To create a fake death certificate so the Romanovs would stop hunting for the child.”
Vanessa’s face went completely pale. “A death certificate? No... no, he’s alive. I feel it.”
“He is alive,” Luca said softly. “Because my father didn't trust anyone else to raise him safely. He brought the boy home. He raised him as his own.”
The warehouse fell deathly silent. The only sound was the distant crashing of waves against the pier.
The reversal hit me like a freight train. I looked at Luca, staring at his broad shoulders, his dark hair, the sharp angle of his jaw.
“Luca,” Vanessa whispered, dropping the gun to her side. Her hands shook violently. “You... you’re my son?”
Luca didn’t flinch. He didn’t run to embrace her. He just looked at her with profound, tragic pity.
“I was adopted,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “Antonio told me my birth parents died in a car crash. I only found out the truth when I found his ledger a year ago. That’s why I was trying to legitimize the family. To buy my way out. Because I knew if the truth ever came out, the Romanovs would come for me.”
Vanessa fell to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably. The son she had spent twenty years searching for was the man she had manipulated, lied to, and nearly married.
“Oh my god,” Vanessa wept, covering her face. “What have I done?”
Before Luca could answer, a loud, slow clapping echoed from the darkness of the warehouse entrance.
Three sleek black sedans rolled into the building, their headlights cutting through the fog. A dozen heavily armed men stepped out, surrounding us entirely.
From the center car, a tall, older man with a silver beard and a tailored wool coat stepped out. He leaned on a cane adorned with a silver wolf’s head.
“A touching family reunion,” the man said, his thick Russian accent dripping with venom.
Vanessa looked up, sheer terror washing over her face.
It was Viktor Romanov. The head of the New York syndicate.

“Hello, Vanessa,” Viktor smiled cruelly. “Thank you for leading me right to the boy.”
