Chapter 7 - THE HOSPITAL CORRIDOR

The sterile, white corridors of Chicago General Hospital smelled of bleach and copper.
I sat on a hard plastic chair, wrapped in a foil emergency blanket, my hands still covered in dried concrete dust from the warehouse floor. It had been four hours since the FBI stormed Pier 4.
Viktor Romanov was dead.
Vanessa was in emergency surgery, fighting for her life.
And Luca Moretti was pacing the length of the waiting room, his tailored suit ruined, his hands stained with the blood of the woman who had given birth to him.
“Luca,” I said softly, breaking the heavy silence. “You need to sit down.”
He stopped pacing and looked at me. The exhaustion in his eyes was profound. The empire he had inherited was crumbling, his family’s darkest secrets were exposed, and the mother he never knew was bleeding out in an operating room.
He walked over and sat heavily beside me. He didn’t say anything. He just reached out and took my hand, his fingers intertwining with mine. His grip was warm, strong, and incredibly grounding.
“I thought I knew who I was,” Luca whispered, staring at the linoleum floor. “I thought I was cleaning up my father’s messes. But I am the mess.”
Answer One: Luca’s identity crisis is the core of his grief. He feels tainted by the blood of the Romanovs and the lies of the Morettis.
“You are not your father,” I said firmly, squeezing his hand. “And you are not Viktor Romanov. You gave up your entire empire tonight to save my mother and end a war. That makes you a good man, Luca.”
He looked at me, a fragile, tentative hope sparking in his dark eyes.
Before he could speak, the double doors of the surgical wing swung open. A doctor in green scrubs walked out, pulling off a bloody mask.
Luca stood up instantly. “How is she?”
The doctor sighed, looking exhausted. “The blade missed her vital organs, but she lost a massive amount of blood. She’s stable, for now. But she is asking for you, Mr. Moretti. Only you.”
Luca looked at me, conflict warring in his expression. I gave him a small nod. “Go.”
He walked through the double doors, leaving me alone in the waiting room.
I leaned my head back against the wall, closing my eyes. It was finally over. The FBI had the ledger. The Russian syndicate was leaderless. My mother was safe at the hospice, surrounded by federal marshals.
But as I sat there, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was a text message from an unknown number.
Your mother is safe, Caroline. But you forgot one detail.
I frowned, staring at the screen. My thumbs moved quickly. Who is this?
The reply came a second later.
You think Antonio Moretti only took one child from that orphanage?
Open Two: If Vanessa only had one son, who was the second child Antonio took?
My heart stopped. I stared at the screen, the words burning into my retinas.
I stood up, my legs feeling like lead. I walked over to the nurses’ station, where a federal agent was standing guard over my belongings that had been processed as evidence.
“Excuse me,” I said to the agent, my voice trembling. “The ledger that Mr. Moretti handed over to the FBI tonight... did you catalog it?”
“Yes, ma'am,” the agent replied politely. “It’s in the secure evidence lockup downstairs.”
“I need to see it,” I demanded. “There’s something else in there. Something Antonio hid.”
The agent frowned. “I can’t let you do that, Miss Hayes. It’s federal evidence.”
“You don’t understand,” I pleaded, my voice rising in panic. “Someone is threatening me right now. They know something about that book!”
I held up my phone to show him the text messages.
The agent looked at the screen. His polite expression didn't change. He slowly reached into his suit jacket. But he didn't pull out a radio or a badge.
He pulled out a suppressed pistol.
Reversal: The FBI agent isn't a federal agent. The Romanov syndicate had infiltrated the police response.

“The boss said to tie up loose ends, Caroline,” the fake agent whispered, pressing the cold barrel of the gun directly against my ribs beneath the desk where the security cameras couldn't see. “Walk toward the stairwell. Make a sound, and I shoot you right here.”
