Chapter 10 - THE ASHES OF AN EMPIRE

Three weeks later.
The heavy oak doors of the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago swung open.
Luca walked out into the crisp, autumn air. He wore a sharp, light grey suit, looking entirely different from the man in black who used to rule the city’s underworld.
I was waiting for him on the stone steps.
“It’s done,” Luca said, walking down the steps to meet me. He let out a long, shuddering breath. “I signed the final immunity agreements. The syndicate’s assets are fully seized. The offshore accounts are drained to pay reparations. The Moretti empire is officially ashes.”
Answer One: Luca dismantled the entire mafia structure, trading his power and wealth for absolute freedom and immunity.
I smiled, reaching out to take his hand. “How does it feel?”
“Light,” Luca laughed, a genuine, booming sound I had never heard before. “I feel incredibly light.”
He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me close, kissing me deeply right there on the courthouse steps. The few reporters gathered nearby snapped photos, but we didn't care. We had nothing left to hide.
“How is Vanessa?” I asked as we walked toward a modest, ordinary sedan parked at the curb.
“She was transferred to a secure rehabilitation facility yesterday,” Luca said, opening the car door for me. “She’s going to survive. We talked for a long time before she left. She’s going to serve her time, but when she gets out... we’re going to try to build a relationship. As mother and son. No lies. No syndicates.”
I slid into the passenger seat, my heart soaring for him. He was finally getting the family he had always wanted, built on truth instead of fear.
“And your mother?” Luca asked, starting the engine.
“Her new doctors are amazing,” I beamed. “The federal witness protection program moved her to a beautiful, quiet facility in Colorado. She’s already complaining about the hospital food, which means she’s getting her strength back.”
Luca smiled, merging onto the highway. We drove out of the city, leaving the towering skyscrapers and the dark shadows of the past behind us.
We drove for two hours, heading north into the quiet, wooded suburbs.
Luca pulled into a long gravel driveway, stopping in front of a beautiful, sprawling farmhouse surrounded by acres of golden oak trees. The property was quiet, peaceful, and entirely disconnected from the violence of Chicago.
“What is this place?” I asked, stepping out of the car and breathing in the crisp air.
“It belonged to my sister,” Luca said softly, walking up beside me. “Antonio bought it for her before she died, but it was kept out of the syndicate’s name. The Feds let me keep it. It’s all I have left.”
Open Two: With no empire and no billions, how will Luca and Caroline start their new life?
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the tarnished silver charm bracelet—his sister’s bracelet. He gently fastened it around my wrist.
“It belongs to you now,” Luca said, his dark eyes looking into mine. “You’re the only Moretti blood left, Caroline. But you have a chance to make the name mean something beautiful.”
I looked down at the silver bluebird charm resting against my pulse. For the first time in my life, I felt perfectly grounded. I wasn't just a housemaid. I wasn't just a pawn in a mafia war. I was a survivor.
“We have a lot of work to do to fix this place up,” I smiled, looking at the slightly peeling paint on the farmhouse porch.
“I’m good with my hands,” Luca grinned, pulling me into a hug. “And I hear you’re pretty good at cleaning up messes.”
I laughed, burying my face in his chest.

As the sun began to set, casting long, golden shadows across the porch, I knew the nightmare was truly over. We had burned the past to the ground, but from the ashes, we were going to build something that would last forever.
