Chapter 2 - THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT DESTROYED A WEDDING

The dining room of the Chicago mansion went completely still.
Forty wealthy guests stopped breathing.
Luca Moretti stared at his sister, Elena, standing by the doorway in her rain-soaked navy coat.
Then he slowly turned his head toward his fiancée.
“What were you going to do to me, Vanessa?”
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
It wasn't a shout.
It was the quiet, lethal tone of a man who ruled a city but had just realized his own house was compromised.
Vanessa stepped backward, her hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table.
“Luca, she’s lying. She’s always been jealous of me.”
She looked around the room, desperate for an ally.
“She’s a sick woman making up stories to ruin our engagement dinner!”
Elena didn't yell.
She walked slowly toward the table, her wet shoes squeaking slightly on the hardwood floor.
“I’m not making up anything, Vanessa.”
Elena reached into her coat pocket.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
I was just the housemaid, standing near the serving trays, but I couldn't look away.
Elena pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“Last Christmas Eve, you showed me a photograph, Vanessa.”
Vanessa’s face lost all its color.
“Don't,” she whispered.
Elena ignored her.
She placed the paper on the table and pushed it toward her brother.
“She told me that if I ever contacted you again, she would give this to the police.”
Luca picked up the photograph.
I couldn't see what it was from where I stood.
But I saw the reaction it caused.
Luca’s broad shoulders went completely rigid.
His dark eyes widened.
Then he looked at Vanessa with absolute, unadulterated disgust.
“Where did you get this?”
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
“Luca, I was protecting you. I kept it safe.”
“Where did you get it?” he repeated, his voice dropping an octave.
Elena answered for her.
“Her father gave it to her, Luca. Richard Bellini has been holding onto that picture for three years.”
A gasp rippled through the guests.
Richard Bellini was a powerful politician in Chicago.
A man who built his career on being untouchable.
“It’s a picture of the warehouse fire,” Elena said softly. “The night our uncle died.”
The room went dead silent.
Everyone knew the story.
Luca’s uncle had betrayed the family three years ago, trying to sell their territory to a rival cartel.
He had died in a tragic fire before the deal could happen.
The police ruled it an accident.
“The photograph proves it wasn't an accident,” Elena continued, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. “It shows your men setting the fire, Luca.”
Vanessa stepped forward, her hands shaking.
“I kept it a secret! I told my father I would handle you! That’s why we got engaged! I saved you from a federal indictment!”
Luca stared at the woman he was supposed to marry.
“You didn't save me.”
He dropped the photograph onto the table.
“You blackmailed me into a marriage to secure my family’s wealth for your father.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with panicked tears.
“I love you, Luca!”
“You love power,” he corrected her coldly.
He turned to his security chief, Marco, who was standing near the wall.
“Escort Miss Bellini to her room. Pack her things. She’s leaving.”
Vanessa shrieked.
“You can't do this! If you kick me out, my father will release the photo to the FBI tonight! You’ll go to prison!”
Luca didn't flinch.
“Let him try.”
He pointed toward the door.
“Get her out of my sight.”
Two armed guards grabbed Vanessa’s arms and dragged her from the dining room.
She screamed his name all the way down the hall.
Luca stood in the silence that followed.
He looked at the forty terrified guests.
“Dinner is over. Please leave.”
Nobody argued.
Within five minutes, the massive dining room was empty.
Only Luca, Elena, Marco, and I remained.
I began quietly clearing the plates, trying to be invisible.
Luca walked over to his sister.
He didn't speak.
He just wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a tight, desperate hug.
Elena broke down, sobbing into his shoulder.
“I’m so sorry, Luca. I was so scared. I thought she would destroy you.”
“You should have told me,” he whispered, kissing the top of her head. “I would have protected you.”
“I couldn't,” Elena cried. “She didn't just threaten you.”
Luca pulled back, frowning.
“What do you mean?”
Elena wiped her eyes, looking around the room as if terrified someone was listening.
“Luca, she knew about the baby.”
Luca froze.
“What baby?”
Elena took a shuddering breath.
“I didn't abandon the family two years ago because I was selfish.”
She looked at me, standing frozen with a stack of plates in my hands.
Then she looked back at her brother.
“I left because I was pregnant.”
The silence in the room was deafening.
Luca stared at his sister.
“You have a child?”
Elena nodded, tears falling faster now.
“A little boy. His name is Leo.”
Luca’s expression shifted from shock to absolute fury.
“And Vanessa knew?”
“Her father found out,” Elena sobbed. “They told me if I didn't stay away and let Vanessa marry you, they would take Leo from me. They said they would make him disappear.”
Luca’s hands curled into tight fists.
His knuckles turned white.
“Where is he, Elena? Where is my nephew?”
Elena looked down at the floor.
Her face crumpled into a mask of pure agony.
“That’s why I came back today, Luca.”
She looked up, her eyes wide with terror.

“They took him. He’s gone.”
