Chapter 8 - THE TICKING CLOCK IN THE STUDY

I sat alone in the guest suite, staring at the heavy gold necklace in my hands.

The Moretti crest gleamed in the firelight.

It wasn't just a piece of jewelry. It was an apology. Twenty-five years of guilt, forged in gold, passed down from a father to a son, and finally, to me.

I couldn't sleep.

The silence of the mansion was deafening.

I stood up, wrapping the silk robe tightly around myself, and walked out into the dark hallway.

I needed to see him.

I walked softly down the grand staircase, the shadows playing tricks on my exhausted mind.

I saw a sliver of light spilling from beneath the heavy oak doors of Luca’s private study.

I pushed the door open slightly.

Luca was sitting behind his massive mahogany desk.

He wasn't looking at paperwork or counting money.

He was sitting with his elbows on the desk, his face buried in his hands.

He looked completely, utterly broken.

The weight of the empire, the betrayals, and the violence had finally caught up to him in the quiet of the night.

I didn't knock. I pushed the door open fully and walked in.

Luca’s head snapped up.

He reached instinctively for the drawer where he kept his gun, but stopped when he saw me.

“Grace,” he breathed, his voice rough. “You should be sleeping.”

“So should you,” I said quietly.

I walked across the room and stopped in front of his desk.

I placed the heavy gold necklace gently onto the polished wood.

Luca looked at it, then up at me.

His dark eyes were filled with a profound, quiet shame.

“Elena told you,” he said softly.

“She did.”

Luca stood up, turning his back to me to look out the large window into the dark gardens.

“I knew Bellini framed your grandfather, Grace. I found out three months ago when Vanessa finally showed me my father’s confession.”

He placed his hands on the window sill, his shoulders tense.

“I wanted to burn Bellini’s life to the ground that day. But Vanessa told me she had moved the original documents to a secure location. If I touched her or her father, the documents would be destroyed, and Arthur would die in prison.”

He turned around to face me.

“I agreed to marry her to buy time. I had Marco tracking her every move, trying to find where she hid the confession. I was trying to save your grandfather.”

I stared at him, my heart breaking for the burden he had carried alone.

He hadn't been a cold monster. He had been a man trapped in an impossible hostage situation, sacrificing his own future to save an innocent man.

“You didn't have to explain that to me, Luca,” I said softly.

“I did,” he insisted, walking slowly around the desk toward me. “Because when you walked into my dining room tonight and told the truth about Elena... you broke the stalemate. You forced my hand. And it was the best thing anyone has ever done for me.”

He stopped two feet away from me.

He reached out and gently picked up the gold necklace from the desk.

“My father was a coward,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “He let your family suffer because he was afraid of a politician. I swore I would never be like him.”

He looked down at me, his eyes searching mine for any sign of rejection.

“I am so sorry it took me this long to fix it, Grace.”

Tears welled in my eyes.

I didn't step back.

I closed the distance between us.

I reached up and rested my hands on his broad chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart beneath his shirt.

“You fixed it, Luca,” I whispered. “You saved my grandfather. You saved Leo. You aren't your father.”

Luca closed his eyes, letting out a ragged breath, as if my forgiveness was the only thing keeping him standing.

He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me firmly against him.

He buried his face in my hair, holding me so tightly I could feel the tension draining from his muscles.

We stood there in the quiet study, the ticking of the grandfather clock the only sound in the room.

For the first time in his life, the mafia boss wasn't holding a weapon. He was holding onto me like a lifeline.

“Grace,” he murmured against my hair.

“Yes.”

“I don't want you to leave tomorrow.”

I pulled back slightly, looking up into his face.

“I don't have anywhere to go,” I admitted. “My apartment belongs to the agency.”

“You belong here,” Luca said fiercely. “With me.”

He brought one hand up to cradle my cheek. His thumb brushed softly across my cheekbone.

“I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by people who wanted something from me. My money, my power, my name.”

He leaned in, his lips inches from mine.

“You are the only person who ever looked at me and just wanted the truth.”

My breath hitched.

I looked into his dark, intense eyes, and I knew my life would never be the same.

“I want you, Luca,” I whispered.

He didn't hesitate.

He captured my lips in a kiss that tasted of desperation, relief, and absolute, undeniable passion.

It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was possessive and deep, erasing the shadows of the mansion and replacing them with a fire that consumed us both.

I tangled my fingers in his dark hair, pulling him closer, letting myself fall completely into the dangerous, beautiful world of Luca Moretti.

When we finally broke apart, we were both breathless.

Luca rested his forehead against mine, a genuine, breathtaking smile touching his lips.

“Tomorrow,” Luca promised, “I dismantle the rest of this empire. I am done with the shadows.”

But before I could answer, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open.

Marco stood in the doorway, his face completely pale.

“Boss,” Marco said, his voice shaking.

Luca spun around, instantly shielding me behind him.

“What is it, Marco?”

“It’s Senator Bellini,” Marco said, swallowing hard.

“What about him? Is he in federal custody?”

Marco shook his head.

“No, Boss. The FBI transport van never made it to the field office.”

Luca froze.

“What do you mean?”

May you like

“The van was ambushed on the highway ten minutes ago,” Marco said, his eyes wide with fear. “Senator Bellini is gone.”
