Chapter 6 - THE PEARL BRACELET IN THE SNOW

The wail of police sirens pierced the cold Chicago night.

They were distant, but closing in fast.

Vanessa had played her final card.

She knew she couldn't win, so she was going to burn everything down. She wanted the police to find Luca in an abandoned building with a kidnapped child and a fugitive.

It would be a media circus. It would destroy his legitimate businesses and send my grandfather back to prison before the FBI ever heard the confession tape.

“Marco,” Luca said, his voice devoid of panic. “How much time do we have?”

“Two minutes, Boss. Maybe three.”

Luca looked at my grandfather.

“Arthur, you need to leave. If the local cops find you here, they won't care about the tape. Bellini’s people in the precinct will bury you.”

“I’m not leaving my granddaughter,” Arthur said stubbornly.

“I will protect her,” Luca swore, his eyes locking onto my grandfather’s. “I give you my word as a man. I will keep her safe.”

Arthur hesitated, but he saw the absolute truth in Luca’s face.

He kissed my forehead quickly.

“I love you, Gracie. I’ll find you when this is over.”

Arthur vanished back down the dark hallway, heading for the coal chute.

Luca turned to Marco.

“Take Leo out the back exit. Get him to Elena in the SUV. Drive away now. Do not stop for the police.”

Marco carefully took the sleeping boy from Luca’s arms.

“What about you, Boss?”

“I’m going to stay and talk to my fiancée.”

“Luca, no!” I grabbed his arm. “You can't stay here alone. They’ll arrest you!”

Luca looked down at my hand gripping his sleeve.

The harsh lines of his face softened.

“I won't be alone, Grace.”

He took my hand, lacing his fingers through mine.

“We’re going to walk out the front door together.”

I didn't argue.

We moved quickly through the dusty corridors of the orphanage, heading toward the boarded-up main entrance.

Luca kicked the rotting plywood aside with one powerful strike of his boot.

We stepped out onto the wide stone stairs just as the first police cruisers screeched to a halt in the street, their blue and red lights painting the falling rain.

And stepping out of a black sedan directly behind the police cars was Vanessa.

She looked wild.

Her beautiful gown was soaked and ruined. Her makeup was running.

But she was smiling a triumphant, vicious smile.

“There he is, officers!” Vanessa screamed, pointing at Luca. “He kidnapped my father! He has a child in there!”

The officers drew their weapons, taking cover behind their car doors.

“Put your hands up! Both of you!” the lead officer yelled.

Luca didn't raise his hands.

He stood perfectly still, his posture radiating absolute authority.

He kept my hand firmly in his.

“I don't have a weapon, Officer,” Luca called out calmly. “And the child is safely with his mother, halfway across the city.”

Vanessa’s smile faltered.

“He’s lying! Search the building!”

The lead officer frowned, keeping his gun trained on Luca.

“Mr. Moretti, your fiancée called in a hostage situation.”

“My ex-fiancée,” Luca corrected smoothly. “Is currently suffering from a severe mental breakdown. Her father, Senator Bellini, was just arrested by the FBI twenty minutes ago for fraud and murder.”

The officers exchanged confused glances.

Senator Bellini’s arrest hadn't hit the scanners yet, but Luca’s confidence was unnerving them.

“That’s a lie!” Vanessa shrieked, panic creeping into her voice. “My father is a Senator! You’re a monster!”

She lunged forward, trying to grab the officer’s gun.

It was a stupid, desperate move.

The officer easily shoved her back, and she slipped on the wet pavement, falling hard onto the snow-dusted ground.

As she fell, the delicate pearl bracelet she wore on her wrist snagged on the edge of the police cruiser’s bumper.

It snapped.

Dozens of white pearls scattered across the wet asphalt.

Vanessa scrambled on her hands and knees in the snow, desperately trying to gather the pearls.

“No, no, no!” she sobbed, her manic energy completely breaking. “My pearls!”

I watched her, a sudden memory flashing in my mind.

I had seen that bracelet before.

Not on Vanessa’s wrist.

“Mr. Moretti,” I whispered, pulling on Luca’s hand.

He looked down at me.

“What is it, Grace?”

“That bracelet,” I said, pointing to the pearls scattered in the snow. “It isn't hers.”

Luca frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Three days ago, I was cleaning the guest room Elena had stayed in last year. I found an empty jewelry box under the bed. It had an inscription inside: To Elena, from Mom.”

I looked up at Luca.

“Vanessa didn't just steal Elena’s place in your life. She stole your mother’s pearls from her room.”

Luca’s expression turned to ice.

He let go of my hand and walked slowly down the stone stairs.

The police officers didn't stop him. They were too busy watching Vanessa completely unravel in the snow.

Luca stopped right in front of her.

He reached down and picked up a single, perfect white pearl.

He looked at Vanessa, who was shivering and sobbing at his feet.

“You wore my mother’s pearls to our engagement dinner,” Luca said quietly.

Vanessa looked up, her eyes wide with terror.

“Luca, please—”

“You told me Elena stole them before she left.”

He dropped the pearl into the mud.

“You have taken everything from my family, Vanessa. But you will never touch us again.”

He looked at the lead police officer.

“Call the FBI field office. Ask for Special Agent Harris. Tell him Luca Moretti has the star witness for the Bellini corruption case standing right here.”

The officer hesitated, then pulled his radio.

Within minutes, the confirmation came through.

The local police holstered their weapons.

They didn't arrest Luca.

They arrested Vanessa.

She screamed and kicked as they handcuffed her and put her in the back of the cruiser.

Her reign of terror in the Moretti house was over.

Luca watched the police cars drive away, their sirens fading into the distance.

The street grew quiet again.

He turned around and walked back up the stairs to where I was standing.

He didn't look like a mafia boss.

He looked exhausted.

He reached out and gently brushed a wet strand of hair from my face.

His fingers were warm against my cold skin.

May you like

“Let's go home, Grace.”
