Chapter 10 - THE NEW EMPIRE

(Following the prompt's pacing, Chapter 10 begins the aftermath/new life).

Six months later.

The heat of a Chicago summer beat down against the expansive windows of Luca’s new downtown office.

It wasn't a dark, smoke-filled room hidden behind a restaurant.

It was a sleek, modern glass corner office on the fortieth floor of the newly rebranded Moretti Enterprises building.

I stood by the window, looking out over the city skyline.

I wore a tailored navy blazer and slacks, holding a sleek tablet.

I wasn't a housekeeper anymore.

I was Grace Moretti.

And I was the Vice President of the Moretti Foundation, overseeing millions of dollars in charitable grants for marginalized families on the south side of Chicago.

The heavy glass doors of the office opened, and Luca walked in.

He had just finished a three-hour board meeting, finalizing the acquisition of a massive, legitimate shipping company.

He loosened his tie, letting out a long, exhausted sigh, but the moment he saw me, his entire demeanor changed.

He walked across the room, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder.

“You look beautiful when you’re conquering the world,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to my neck.

I leaned back against him, smiling.

“I just approved the funding for the new community center in my old neighborhood,” I said proudly. “My grandfather is going to oversee the construction. He’s thrilled to be managing a site again.”

Luca smiled against my skin.

“He deserves it. He’s a good man.”

He turned me around in his arms, looking down into my eyes.

“We have a dinner tonight,” Luca said, his voice dropping slightly.

I frowned, adjusting his collar.

“A business dinner?”

“No,” Luca said. “A family dinner. At the estate. Elena and Leo are coming over. But there’s someone else I invited.”

I looked at him, curious.

“Who?”

Luca hesitated, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his usually confident face.

“My uncle. Dominic.”

My breath caught.

Dominic Moretti. Luca’s father’s younger brother.

He had lived in Italy for twenty years, managing the family’s overseas interests. He had always been a ghost to me, a name spoken in hushed tones by the older guards.

“Why is he coming?” I asked cautiously.

Luca stepped back, running a hand through his dark hair.

“Dominic heard that I dismantled the syndicate. He heard that I gave up our territory to the rival families and went completely legitimate.”

Luca looked out the window, his jaw tightening.

“He isn't happy about it, Grace. He thinks I’ve weakened the Moretti name. He flew in this morning to tell me in person.”

I felt a cold knot form in my stomach.

We had just found peace. We had just built a beautiful, safe life.

I walked over and took Luca’s hand, lacing my fingers through his.

“Are you worried he’s going to try to take over?”

Luca looked down at me, his dark eyes fierce and protective.

“He doesn't have the power to take over. The men are loyal to me. But Dominic is old-school. He believes respect is only earned through fear. I invited him to dinner to show him he’s wrong.”

He squeezed my hand.

“But I need you by my side tonight, Grace. He’s going to try to intimidate us. He’s going to look at you, a former maid, and try to use you to insult me.”

I lifted my chin, feeling a sudden surge of fierce, protective anger for the man I loved.

“Let him try,” I said softly.

That evening, the grand dining room of the estate was set for five.

I wore a simple, elegant emerald green dress. I wore no diamonds, only the plain gold wedding band forged from the family crest.

At exactly seven o'clock, the heavy front doors opened.

Dominic Moretti walked in.

He was in his late sixties, with silver hair slicked back and sharp, calculating eyes that looked exactly like Luca’s father’s.

He wore an impeccable, custom-tailored suit.

He didn't smile when he saw Luca.

He walked over and kissed Luca on both cheeks, a cold, formal mafia greeting.

“Luca,” Dominic said, his voice deep and gravelly with an Italian accent. “You look soft.”

Luca didn't flinch.

“I look happy, Uncle. Welcome to my home.”

Dominic’s eyes immediately snapped to me.

He looked me up and down, his gaze lingering on my simple dress and the lack of ostentatious jewelry.

“And this must be the famous housekeeper,” Dominic sneered softly. “The girl who convinced the great Luca Moretti to trade his crown for a charity foundation.”

I felt the anger flare in my chest, but I kept my face perfectly neutral.

I remembered my mother’s lessons.

Never let someone believe they're unwanted, but never let them believe they own you.

I stepped forward and offered my hand.

“My name is Grace Moretti,” I said clearly. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Dominic.”

Dominic looked at my outstretched hand for a long, insulting moment before finally taking it.

His grip was painfully tight, meant to intimidate.

I didn't break eye contact, and I didn't pull away.

Dinner was a tense, quiet affair.

Elena sat across from me, keeping little Leo quiet and focused on his food. She looked nervous, glancing between her uncle and her brother.

Dominic dominated the conversation, complaining about how the old neighborhoods were falling apart since Luca pulled the family’s protection.

“The rival families are laughing at us, Luca,” Dominic said, taking a sip of his red wine. “They think you’re weak because you refuse to spill blood. You’re letting rats run the city.”

Luca wiped his mouth with his napkin, setting it neatly on the table.

“I am building skyscrapers, Dominic. I am building a legitimate fortune that the federal government can never touch. Let the rivals fight over scraps in the alleyways. We own the skyline.”

Dominic slammed his wine glass down.

“You own nothing without respect!” he barked, pointing a finger at Luca. “Your father would be ashamed of you! Sitting at a table with a maid instead of a proper mob wife who understands our world!”

The room went dead silent.

Elena gasped.

Luca’s face turned to stone.

He slowly placed his hands on the table, preparing to stand up and throw his uncle out of the house.

But before he could, I spoke.

“Dominic,” I said quietly.

The older man glared at me.

“What is it, girl?”

I didn't raise my voice. I used the exact same quiet, lethal tone Luca used when he meant absolute business.

“When I was a maid in this house, I cleaned the blood off the floors after your brother’s men made mistakes,” I said evenly.

“I washed the clothes of terrified guards. I watched Vanessa Bellini blackmail this family into a corner because she possessed secrets born of violence.”

I picked up my wine glass, taking a slow, calm sip.

“Your world of respect and fear almost got this little boy kidnapped and killed,” I said, pointing a steady finger toward Leo.

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“This family survived for a hundred years before you walked in here,” I continued, my eyes locking onto his. “But it was rotting from the inside. Luca didn't weaken the Moretti name. He saved it. He made it clean. He made it bulletproof.”

I set my glass down.

“If you cannot respect the man who saved your family’s legacy, then you do not belong at this table.”

Silence hung heavy in the massive dining room.

Nobody had ever spoken to Dominic Moretti like that and lived.

Dominic stared at me, his eyes wide with genuine shock.

He looked at Luca.

Luca was leaning back in his chair, a slow, incredibly proud smile spreading across his face. He looked at his uncle as if to say, I told you so.

Dominic slowly looked back at me.

The anger in his eyes faded, replaced by a begrudging, profound respect.

He picked up his wine glass.

He raised it, pointing it directly at me.

“Your father was wrong, Luca,” Dominic said softly. “You didn't find a maid.”

He took a sip of his wine.

“You found a queen.”
