Chapter 6 - THE PHOTOGRAPH OF BETRAYAL

St. Jude’s Hospital was quiet at 2:00 AM.
Luca parked the SUV in the shadows of the alley. He left the engine running.
"Stay low, keep Leo in the back, and lock the doors," Luca instructed, chambering a round in Marco’s stolen gun. "If I'm not back in ten minutes, drive to the police precinct in the 4th district. Ask for Captain Miller. He owes me."
"Luca, wait," Maria said, grabbing his arm. She looked deep into his eyes. "Be careful. Please."
Luca’s expression softened for a fraction of a second. He touched her hand, then slipped into the night.
Maria locked the doors, pulling Leo into her lap in the back seat. The minutes crawled by like hours.
Inside the hospital, Luca moved like a ghost. He took the stairs to the fourth floor, bypassing the cameras.
He found Room 412.
The door was ajar.
Luca slipped inside, gun raised.
The bed was empty. The heart monitor flatlined, unhooked.
Panic seized him. He spun around, only to feel the cold barrel of a gun press against the back of his neck.
"Drop it, Moretti," a rough voice commanded.
Luca let his weapon fall to the linoleum.
A man in a cheap suit pushed him forward. Sitting in a wheelchair by the window, hooked to a portable oxygen tank, was Elena Santos. Maria’s mother.
Standing behind her was Vanessa Bellini.
"You always were predictable, Luca," Vanessa smiled, stepping into the light. She held up a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside was the black box.
"You got the box," Luca said, his jaw tight. "Why are you still here?"
"Because the old bat won't give me the code," Vanessa sneered, slapping the back of Elena’s wheelchair. "She says she’ll only tell Maria."
Elena, frail but with eyes as sharp as her daughter’s, looked at Luca. "Where is my girl?"
"She's safe," Luca said.
"Bring her up," Vanessa ordered the man with the gun. "Or I blow the mother's brains out."
"No!" Elena croaked. She looked at Vanessa. "I'll give you the code. Just let my daughter go."
"Tell me," Vanessa demanded.
"0-8-1-4," Elena whispered.
Vanessa’s eyes lit up with triumph. She punched the code into the digital lock on the box. It clicked open.
She reached inside and pulled out a stack of financial ledgers.
"Finally," Vanessa breathed.
But as she pulled the books out, a single photograph slipped from the pages and landed on the floor.
Luca looked down at it.
It wasn't a picture of Vanessa's father.
It was a picture of Vanessa, ten years ago, standing in a warehouse, shaking hands with the head of the Russian syndicate.
Vanessa froze, staring at the photo.
"Answer one question, open another," Luca said coldly, realization dawning on him. "This was never about your father’s debts, Vanessa. You sold out the Moretti family to the Russians. You orchestrated the war that killed my uncle. My mother found out you were a traitor."
Vanessa’s face twisted with pure hatred. She raised her gun directly at Luca’s chest.
"Goodbye, darling."

Before she could pull the trigger, the fire alarm shattered the silence of the hospital.
