Chapter 9 - THE COAT IN THE WATER

The impact was like hitting solid concrete.

The freezing water of Lake Michigan forced the air from Maria’s lungs. She plunged into the darkness, the heavy fabric of her uniform dragging her down.

Panic seized her. But then she felt a hand grab her collar, pulling her violently upward.

She broke the surface, gasping for air, the icy wind biting her face.

Luca was beside her, treading water with one arm while keeping Elena’s head above the waves with the other.

"Leo!" Maria screamed, spinning in the water. "Leo!"

"Maria, here!" a small voice cried out.

Ten feet away, the heavy wool coat Luca had wrapped around Leo was acting as a temporary life preserver, trapping enough air to keep the boy afloat.

Maria swam to him, wrapping her arms around his small, shivering body.

Above them, the lighthouse exploded in a massive fireball, showering the lake with sparks. The distraction was perfect. Vanessa’s men were watching the flames, assuming they had burned alive.

"The shoreline," Luca grunted, dragging Elena toward the dark, rocky beach out of the fire's glow.

They hauled themselves onto the freezing sand, collapsing in exhaustion. They were alive, but hypothermia was minutes away.

"The road," Luca ordered, his teeth chattering. "We have to keep moving."

They stumbled through the darkness until they reached the highway. A pair of headlights approached. Luca stood in the middle of the road, raising his gun.

A state trooper cruiser slammed on its brakes.

The officer stepped out, hand on his holster, but stopped when he saw Luca Moretti, bleeding and soaking wet, shielding a child and two women.

"Get Captain Miller on the radio," Luca growled. "Now."

Two hours later, they were wrapped in thermal blankets inside the heavily guarded precinct. Captain Miller had mobilized a tactical unit.

The coordinates from the ticket had been raided. The real ledger was recovered.

It contained irrefutable proof of Vanessa Bellini’s treason, money laundering, and direct orders for the murder of Isabella Moretti.

Vanessa was arrested at the private airport, attempting to board a flight to Moscow. When they dragged her into the precinct in handcuffs, her silk gown ruined and her face pale with terror, she locked eyes with Luca.

She looked small. Pathetic.

Luca didn't say a word to her. He simply turned his back, returning to his son.

Justice had finally been served.

In the precinct medical wing, Maria sat on a cot, brushing Leo’s damp hair. The boy was exhausted, but safe. He leaned into her, his small arms wrapped tightly around her waist.

"I love you, Maria," Leo mumbled sleepily.

Maria kissed his forehead, tears of profound relief filling her eyes. "I love you too, my brave boy."

Luca walked in, carrying two cups of hot tea. He handed one to Maria, his dark eyes soft.

Elena was resting comfortably in the next room, under police protection. The medical bills would be covered. Her dignity, and Maria’s freedom, were fully restored.

For the first time in nine years, Luca Moretti smiled a real, genuine smile.

The nightmare was over.

But as Luca reached into his pocket to hand Maria her silver swallow necklace, his fingers brushed against something else.

Something he had found clutched in Vanessa’s hand when they arrested her.

He pulled it out, staring at it in confusion.

It was a small, rusted key. And etched into the brass was the name: Santos.
