Chapter 10 - THE RUSTED KEY

The precinct was quiet, the adrenaline of the night finally fading into the heavy exhaustion of early morning.
Maria took a sip of her tea, letting the warmth spread through her shivering body. She watched Luca stare at the small, rusted key in his palm.
"Where did you get that?" Maria asked, keeping her voice low so she wouldn't wake Leo, who was asleep on her lap.
"The police pulled it from Vanessa’s pocket during her arrest," Luca said, his brow furrowed. He held it up to the harsh fluorescent light. "It has your family name on it. Santos."
Maria frowned. She carefully slid Leo’s head onto a pillow and stood up, walking over to Luca.
She took the key. It was old, the brass heavy and cold.
"I’ve never seen this before," Maria said. "My family didn't own anything worth locking up. Not since my father died."
Luca’s eyes sharpened. "Your father?"
"He died when I was seven," Maria explained softly. "A hit-and-run. They never found the driver. My mother raised me on her own after that, which is why she had to take the housekeeping job at your estate."
Luca looked from the key to Maria’s face. The pieces of a new, unsettling puzzle were beginning to form in his mind.
Vanessa had held onto this key desperately, even while trying to flee the country.
"Maria," Luca said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "What was your father's profession?"
"He was an accountant," she replied. "He worked for a small firm downtown. Nothing glamorous."
Luca took out his phone and dialed Captain Miller’s extension. "Miller. I need you to run a name through the syndicate archives. A civilian accountant. Passed away twenty-eight years ago. Last name Santos."
They waited in tense silence. Ten minutes later, Miller walked into the medical room, holding a dusty, redacted file.
"You're not going to believe this, Luca," Miller said, handing him the folder. "Santos wasn't just an accountant. He was a forensic auditor for the FBI. He was investigating the Bellini family’s ties to the Russian mob nearly three decades ago."
Maria felt the floor drop beneath her. "My father was FBI?"
"And he didn't die in a random hit-and-run," Miller said grimly. "The file says he was assassinated the night before he was going to testify."
Luca looked at the rusted key in Maria’s hand.
"Vanessa didn't just target your mother because she was Isabella’s housekeeper," Luca realized, the horror dawning on him. "She targeted your family because your father built the original case against hers."
Maria’s hands trembled. Her entire life, the poverty, the struggles, her mother’s grueling work—it was all fallout from a murder orchestrated by the Bellinis.
"This key," Luca said gently, placing his hand over hers. "It must belong to a safety deposit box. The one your father used to hide his original evidence."
"But if Vanessa had the key," Maria said, looking up at him with tear-filled eyes, "why didn't she destroy the evidence years ago?"
"Because," a voice rasped from the doorway.
They turned. Elena was standing there, leaning heavily on a cane, a fierce, protective fire in her eyes.

"Because she needed a blood relative to open the vault," Elena said. "That’s why she hired you, Maria. She was waiting for the right moment to force you to open it."
