Chapter 3 - THE SWISS TICKET

The dining room erupted into chaotic whispers.
Vanessa scrambled backward, her ruined red gown dripping ice water onto the expensive Persian rug. Her face, usually a mask of perfectly contoured arrogance, was completely pale.
"That… that isn't mine!" Vanessa stammered, pointing a shaking finger at Caroline. "She planted it! The maid is trying to frame me!"
Luca walked slowly toward the table. The guests parted for him, instinctively recognizing the lethal shift in his demeanor.
He didn't yell. He didn't raise his hands.
He simply looked down at the briefcase.
"A quarter of a million dollars in cash," Luca observed quietly. He picked up the plane ticket. "And a one-way flight to Geneva, departing tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM."
He turned to his fiancée.
"You were leaving me, Vanessa?" Luca asked, his voice smooth and deadly. "Three days before our wedding?"
"No! Luca, darling, listen to me," Vanessa pleaded, stepping toward him, her hands raised in a desperate, placating gesture. "I was going to surprise you! It was for our honeymoon!"
"In a separate name?" Luca asked, dropping the ticket back onto the table.
He looked at Caroline. The young woman was leaning heavily on her cane, her face pale from pain, but her eyes were fiercely defiant.
"Where did you find this, Caroline?" Luca asked.
"Under her chair," Caroline said firmly. "She brought it down from her bedroom while you were out in the garden. She told the guests she went to fetch a wedding gift, but she was hiding this."
"She’s a liar!" Vanessa shrieked. "She’s a filthy little thief who wants to ruin my life because I made her take off her shoes!"
Luca ignored Vanessa entirely. He looked at the stacks of cash. He pulled one bundle out and snapped the paper band.
He examined the bills carefully.
"These bills are marked," Luca said, his eyes narrowing. "They bear the stamp of the downtown exchange. The exchange controlled by the Russian syndicate."
A collective gasp echoed through the room. The Russian syndicate was the Moretti family's most brutal rival. A blood feud had existed between the two factions for decades.
"Why do you have Russian money, Vanessa?" Luca asked, stepping toward her.
Vanessa backed up until she hit the wall. "I… I don't. It’s a setup. Your uncle! Your uncle planted it to ruin the wedding!"
"My uncle is dead," Luca said coldly. "Try again."
Caroline shifted her weight on her cane. "Mr. Moretti," she said quietly. "There’s something else in the briefcase."
Luca turned back to the table. He reached beneath the stacks of cash and pulled out a heavy, forged iron key. It was old, the metal pitted with rust.
Attached to the key was a small, faded leather tag.
The tag read: Vault 4 - The Docks.
Luca froze.
The entire room seemed to hold its breath.
"Vault 4," Luca repeated, the words tasting like ash in his mouth.
"What is it, sir?" Caroline asked, seeing the absolute devastation wash over his face.
Luca didn't answer her. He looked at Vanessa. The fury in his eyes was so intense it made the guests physically step back.
"Vault 4 is the storage unit where my family kept the illegal weapons shipments twelve years ago," Luca said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "The shipment that was raided by the FBI. The raid that sent my father to prison, where he died."
Vanessa began to shake uncontrollably.
"We never found the rat who tipped off the Feds," Luca continued, taking a slow, menacing step toward her. "We searched for a decade. We tortured our own men. But the rat wasn't a soldier, was it, Vanessa? The rat was Julian."
"No!" Vanessa cried, covering her face.
"Julian sold out my father to the FBI!" Luca roared, the sound echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "And the Russians paid him for it! They paid him to eliminate the Moretti Don, and they gave him Elena as a prize!"
The horrifying truth settled over the room. Julian Bellini hadn't 'rescued' Elena. He had kidnapped the Don's daughter as leverage, hiding her away while he took the Russian payout.
And Vanessa knew.
"You knew," Luca said, stopping inches from her face. "You knew your brother killed my sister. You knew he betrayed my father. And you were taking this Russian blood money and running to Switzerland before I found out the truth."
Vanessa fell to her knees, sobbing hysterically. "I didn't know about Elena! I swear, Luca! Julian only told me yesterday! He said you were going to kill us both! I was just trying to survive!"
Luca looked down at her with absolute disgust.
"Daniel," Luca commanded.
His massive head of security stepped forward.
"Lock her in the wine cellar," Luca ordered. "Nobody speaks to her. Nobody feeds her."
"Luca, please!" Vanessa screamed as Daniel grabbed her arm, hauling her to her feet. "I love you! I was trying to protect you!"
"Take her away," Luca said.
As Vanessa was dragged screaming from the dining room, the wealthy guests stood in terrified silence.
Luca turned to them.
"The engagement is broken," Luca announced, his voice devoid of emotion. "Get out of my house."
Within three minutes, the dining room was completely empty, save for Luca, Caroline, and the briefcase full of blood money.
Luca walked over to Caroline. The adrenaline seemed to be fading from her face, leaving her swaying slightly on her cane.
"You need to sit down," Luca said gently, pulling out a chair for her.
"I'm fine, sir," Caroline whispered, though she sank into the chair with obvious relief.
Luca crouched beside her, ignoring the ruined red dress Vanessa had left behind, ignoring the briefcase. He looked at the brave, defiant young woman who had just blown his world apart to save his niece.
"Why did you do it?" Luca asked softly. "You knew Vanessa could destroy your life. You knew she had the power to ruin your family. Why did you fight back?"
Caroline looked down at her hands.
"Because," she whispered, "when I was ten years old, my father was murdered by the Russian syndicate. They left him in an alley because he couldn't pay his gambling debts."
She looked up, tears shining in her eyes.
"I know what happens when men like Julian Bellini get away with their crimes," Caroline said fiercely. "I wasn't going to let that little girl grow up without a family. Not if I could stop it."
Luca stared at her, deeply moved by the incredible strength hidden behind her quiet demeanor.
He reached out, gently covering her hand with his.
"I owe you a debt I can never repay, Caroline," Luca murmured.
Before she could answer, a loud, frantic banging echoed from the front of the house.
A guard burst into the dining room, his face pale.
"Boss!" the guard shouted. "It's the perimeter team! A convoy of six black SUVs just breached the front gates!"

Luca stood up instantly, drawing a heavy handgun from his shoulder holster. "The Russians?"
"No, sir," the guard swallowed hard. "It's the FBI. And they have a warrant for your arrest."
