Chapter 5 - THE COAT

The heavy thud of Daniel tackling Mrs. Carter to the floor was barely audible over the screaming fire alarms.

Caroline stumbled backward, dropping her cane as the older woman’s suppressed pistol clattered across the hardwood floor. Daniel, a man who had survived a dozen cartel wars, subdued the traitorous housekeeper in less than three seconds. He pinned her arms behind her back, zip-tying her wrists with ruthless efficiency.

"Get the gun!" Daniel yelled over the alarms.

Caroline scrambled forward on her hands and knees, ignoring the searing pain in her injured foot, and snatched the heavy weapon. It felt cold and terrifying in her hands.

"The Feds are going to flood this hallway in twenty seconds," Daniel panted, hauling Mrs. Carter to her feet. The older woman glared at them, blood trickling from a cut on her lip.

"Let them," Mrs. Carter sneered over the noise. "Tell them I'm a Russian spy. See who they believe—a mafia enforcer, or the sweet old head housekeeper who was just 'assaulted' during a raid."

She was right. If the FBI found Daniel holding her hostage, they would shoot him on sight.

"We need leverage," Caroline said, her mind racing. "Daniel, take her to the safe room. Lock her in with Rachel and Lucy. The Feds don't have the biometric code to open it."

Daniel nodded in agreement. He dragged Mrs. Carter toward the hidden service stairs. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to find proof," Caroline said fiercely. "If she's been working for the Russians for ten years, she has a communication device. A ledger. Something."

"Check her quarters," Daniel yelled back as he disappeared down the stairwell. "But be fast, Caroline! You have three minutes before the Feds sweep the staff wing!"

Caroline gripped the heavy pistol and turned toward the staff quarters at the back of the estate.

Her foot throbbed violently with every step, but the adrenaline masked the worst of the pain. She navigated the narrow, utilitarian corridors she knew so well, finally reaching Mrs. Carter’s private suite.

The door was locked.

Caroline didn't have time for finesse. She raised the heavy pistol and smashed the grip against the cheap brass doorknob until the locking mechanism shattered.

She pushed the door open.

Mrs. Carter's room was immaculate, devoid of personality. A perfectly made bed, a small desk, a single armchair.

Caroline began tearing the room apart. She checked under the mattress, inside the air vents, behind the generic framed prints on the walls. Nothing.

Think, Caroline told herself, her chest heaving. Where does a housekeeper hide things?

She opened the small closet. It was filled with identical black and white uniforms.

But hanging at the very back, covered by a clear plastic dry-cleaning bag, was a coat.

Not a cheap staff jacket.

It was a heavy, incredibly expensive men's cashmere overcoat. Dark charcoal gray.

Caroline pushed the uniforms aside and touched the soft fabric. It smelled faintly of expensive cigar smoke and old cologne.

Why would the head housekeeper have a man's luxury coat hidden in her closet?

Caroline patted down the pockets. The right pocket was empty.

But in the left interior breast pocket, her fingers brushed against something stiff.

She pulled it out.

It was a small, black leather-bound notebook.

Caroline opened it. The pages were filled with handwritten dates, times, and amounts.

Oct 12 - $50,000 - Wire Transfer (Kazan)

Nov 04 - $75,000 - Cash Drop (Pier 9)

Dec 18 - Elena relocated. Payment pending.

Caroline’s breath hitched. Elena.

Mrs. Carter hadn't just been spying on Luca. She was the one who had helped Julian Bellini orchestrate Elena's kidnapping twelve years ago. She had facilitated the payoffs from the Russians.

But as Caroline flipped to the very last page of the notebook, the blood drained entirely from her face.

The final entry wasn't a bank transfer. It was a single sentence, written in fresh ink, dated for tonight.

Vance takes the bait. L.M. will be eliminated in transit.

L.M.

Luca Moretti.

They weren't taking him to federal prison. They were going to kill him before he ever made it to a cell.

"Hey! Stop right there!"

Caroline spun around.

Two FBI agents in tactical gear were standing in the doorway of the bedroom, their rifles raised, blinding her with mounted flashlights.

"Drop the weapon! Hands in the air!" the lead agent screamed.

Caroline didn't hesitate. She dropped Mrs. Carter's pistol onto the floor and raised her hands, still clutching the black notebook tightly in her left fist.

"I work here!" Caroline shouted over the distant fire alarms, squinting against the harsh light. "I'm a housekeeper!"

The agents moved in quickly. One grabbed her arm, roughly pinning her against the wall to pat her down, while the other secured the dropped weapon.

"What's in your hand?" the agent demanded, noticing the notebook.

"It's proof!" Caroline pleaded, twisting her head to look at him. "Your boss, Agent Vance... he's walking Luca Moretti into an ambush! You have to stop the transport!"

The agent laughed, a cruel, dismissive sound. He snatched the notebook from her hand.

"Sure thing, sweetheart," the agent mocked, not even glancing at the pages. He shoved the notebook into his tactical vest. "We’ll pass that right along."

"You don't understand!" Caroline cried as the agent slapped cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. "They're going to kill him!"

"The only thing I understand," the agent said, hauling her roughly toward the door, "is that you're an accomplice to a mafia boss. Let's go."

They dragged her out of the room, down the long corridor toward the main foyer. Her injured foot dragged uselessly across the floor, sending white-hot spikes of agony up her leg, but she didn't stop fighting.

They reached the grand foyer. The front doors were wide open, rain blowing in.

Through the doors, Caroline could see the driveway.

Three black FBI SUVs were parked in a line.

Agent Vance was standing near the middle vehicle, watching as two agents shoved a handcuffed Luca into the back seat.

"Luca!" Caroline screamed, struggling violently against the agents holding her.

Luca’s head snapped up. Even in handcuffs, surrounded by federal agents, his eyes found hers through the chaos. He saw the terror in her face. He saw her fighting.

"Caroline!" Luca yelled, trying to surge forward, but an agent slammed a hand onto his shoulder, shoving him down into the vehicle.

"Don't get in the car!" Caroline screamed, her voice tearing. "It's a trap! Vance is working with them!"

Agent Vance turned slowly, his cold eyes locking onto Caroline.

He didn't look surprised. He didn't look angry.

He just smiled.

Vance nodded to the agent holding Caroline.

The agent immediately pulled a heavy stun gun from his belt and jammed it directly into Caroline’s side.

Fifty thousand volts of electricity ripped through her body.

Caroline collapsed to the floor in a violently twitching heap, her vision exploding into brilliant white sparks before everything faded into absolute, terrifying darkness.
