Chapter 8 - THE FIREFIGHT

The shipyard erupted into absolute chaos.

The heavy caliber machine guns mounted on the Moretti SUVs tore through the wooden crates in the warehouse, splintering the illegal weapons shipments into thousands of useless pieces of scrap metal.

The Russian syndicate members returned fire, but they were vastly outgunned and caught completely off guard.

Caroline pressed herself flat against the wet concrete, covering her ears as the deafening roar of the firefight echoed across the water.

Mrs. Carter didn't wait around. The older woman scrambled to her feet, gave Caroline one last desperate look, and bolted into the thick fog rolling off the docks, disappearing into the night.

Caroline didn't care about the treacherous housekeeper. She clutched the black ledger to her chest and forced herself to stand, leaning heavily on a rusted metal barrel for support.

Through the smoke and flashing muzzle bursts, she tried to find Luca.

Inside the ruined warehouse, the SUVs had formed a defensive circle. Daniel leaped from the lead vehicle, an assault rifle tight against his shoulder, dropping two Russian mobsters before they could even aim their weapons.

"Boss!" Daniel roared, sweeping the area.

But Luca wasn't where he had been kneeling.

During the explosion, Luca had thrown himself behind a stack of steel shipping crates to avoid the blast. His hands were still cuffed behind his back, making him incredibly vulnerable.

And stalking toward him through the smoke, completely ignoring the firefight around them, was Agent Vance.

Vance wasn't running. He was walking with chilling purpose, his silver revolver raised, intent on finishing the execution.

"Daniel!" Caroline screamed, pointing toward the back of the warehouse. "Behind the crates!"

Daniel heard her. He spun around, tracking Vance.

But Vanessa Bellini was faster.

The ruined heiress, desperate to survive the collapse of her plan, had grabbed a fallen assault rifle from a dead mobster. She aimed it wildly at Daniel and pulled the trigger.

The spray of bullets missed Daniel, but it forced him to dive for cover behind an SUV, pinning him down.

"You're not ruining my life!" Vanessa shrieked hysterically, firing blindly into the smoke.

Vance reached the steel crates. He looked down at Luca, who was struggling to his feet, severely disadvantaged by his bound hands.

"End of the line, Moretti," Vance smiled, raising the revolver to Luca's head.

Caroline didn't think. The adrenaline overrode the agonizing pain in her foot.

She gripped the heavy iron key to Vault 4 in her fist, winding her arm back like a baseball pitcher, and threw it with all her strength.

The heavy, rusted iron key sailed through the smoke-filled air and struck Agent Vance squarely in the side of his face.

Vance cried out, stumbling backward, his shot going wide and burying itself in the concrete floor.

The distraction was all Luca needed.

With incredible agility, Luca swept his leg out, catching Vance behind the knees. The corrupt agent crashed to the floor, dropping the revolver.

Luca didn't waste a second. Even with his hands cuffed, he brought his heavy leather boot down viciously onto Vance's throat.

Vance gasped, choking, his hands clawing uselessly at Luca’s leg.

"You don't get to end my family," Luca snarled, his dark eyes burning with lethal fury.

Before Vance could recover, Daniel broke from cover, ignoring Vanessa’s erratic gunfire, and sprinted to Luca's side. With one swift motion, Daniel drew a tactical knife and sliced through the heavy zip-ties binding Luca’s wrists.

Freed, Luca scooped up Vance’s silver revolver.

He aimed it directly at the gasping, terrified federal agent.

"This is for my father," Luca said coldly.

BANG.

Vance went limp. The corrupt mastermind of the Chicago underworld was dead.

Seeing her protector killed, Vanessa dropped her rifle, screaming in absolute terror. She turned to run toward the water.

"Take her alive!" Luca ordered his men, his voice cutting through the fading gunfire.

Two of Luca's soldiers tackled the shrieking heiress to the concrete, zip-tying her wrists as she sobbed and cursed them.

The remaining Russian mobsters, realizing their leaders were dead and they were hopelessly outgunned, threw down their weapons and surrendered.

The firefight was over.

The warehouse was a smoking, blood-stained ruin.

Luca stood amidst the carnage, the silver revolver hanging loosely in his hand. He was bruised, bleeding from a cut on his forehead, his tailored suit torn and covered in concrete dust.

But he was alive. He was still the King of Chicago.

He looked across the warehouse, his eyes scanning the shadows until they locked onto Caroline.

She was leaning against the rusted barrel, trembling violently, covered in mud and blood, clutching the black ledger to her chest.

Luca dropped the gun.

He walked toward her, ignoring his men, ignoring the surrendered mobsters, ignoring the millions of dollars in destroyed weapons.

He closed the distance between them, his dark eyes filled with an emotion so intense it made Caroline’s breath hitch.

"Caroline," Luca whispered, his voice rough and broken.

He didn't ask if she was okay. He didn't ask what she was holding.

He simply reached out and pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair, holding her so tightly she could feel the frantic beating of his heart against her own.

"You came for me," Luca breathed, his voice thick with disbelief and overwhelming gratitude. "You threw a key at a federal agent to save my life."

Caroline let out a choked sob, wrapping her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest. "I couldn't let them kill you, Luca."

He pulled back just enough to look into her eyes, his hands gently framing her dirt-streaked face.

"I owe you my life," Luca said softly. "I owe you everything."

Before Caroline could answer, Daniel walked up behind them, his assault rifle lowered.

"Boss," Daniel said grimly, holding up a ringing cell phone he had pulled from Vance’s pocket. "Vance’s phone is blowing up. The real FBI is on their way. We have about five minutes before this place is swarming with Feds."

Luca’s expression hardened. "Let them come. We have the Russians. We have Vanessa. We'll hand them over."

"It's not that simple, Boss," Daniel warned. "Vance filed the arrest warrant. The DA still thinks you killed Julian Bellini. If you stay here, they'll lock you up while they sort this out. And in federal lockup, the Russians will get to you."

Caroline pulled the black ledger from her chest and handed it to Luca.

"They won't lock you up," Caroline said fiercely. "This is Mrs. Carter's ledger. It has the account numbers. It proves Vance was taking Russian money. It proves Vanessa was paying him."

Luca took the ledger, staring at the handwritten proof of his family's absolution.

He looked at Caroline in sheer amazement.

"Daniel," Luca commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Call our lawyers. Tell them to meet us at the DA's office with the media. We're going to blow this entire conspiracy wide open tonight."

He looked back at Caroline, a small, genuine smile touching his lips.

"And get the medic," Luca added softly. "Caroline needs a doctor for that foot."
