Chapter 3 - THE THREAT HIDDEN IN THE MEDICAL BILLS

The silence on the porch was deafening.
Noah gripped my apron so tightly his knuckles turned white.
"What did you just say?" Luca demanded, stepping between me and the Director.
Director Sterling adjusted the collar of her heavy coat. "Fifty thousand dollars a month, wired to the Ohio Presbyterian Oncology Wing. That's a very generous salary for a housekeeper, Mr. Moretti."
I couldn't breathe. My mother’s treatments. The anonymous donor who had stepped in when our insurance denied the claim last month. The hospital had told me it was a local charity.
I looked at Vanessa. She was standing taller now, a triumphant smirk replacing her panic.
"You see, Luca," Vanessa said, smoothing her silk dress. "I handle the household accounts. I noticed Miss Miller’s little tragedy. So I paid for it. Using the offshore account linked to your shipping business."
Luca’s jaw clenched. "You used a cartel-flagged account to pay a civilian's medical bills?"
"I did," Vanessa said. "Which means if you break our engagement, or if you stop Director Sterling from taking Noah tonight, I will alert the FBI. They will freeze that account. And Grace’s mother will be kicked out of the hospital by morning."
She had set a trap. A perfect, invisible trap.
Noah looked up at me, his eyes brimming with tears. "Miss Grace? Are they going to hurt your mommy?"
"No, sweetie," I lied, my voice shaking. "Everything is fine."
Luca looked at me. For the first time since I'd started working here, the impenetrable Mafia boss looked genuinely torn. He loved his son. But he was not a man who allowed innocent people to die for his mistakes.
"Take the boy," Vanessa ordered the Director.
Sterling stepped forward, reaching for Noah.
"Don't touch him!" I shouted, pulling Noah behind me.
"Grace," Vanessa sneered. "If you don't let him go, your mother’s machines get turned off at midnight."
I felt the tears spill hot over my cheeks. I loved my mother. She was my entire world. But I felt the small, trembling weight of a nine-year-old boy pressing against my legs. A boy who had painted a wooden frame just to be noticed.
"My mother," I said, my voice cracking, "would rather die than let me hand a child over to a monster."
Luca’s eyes widened. He stared at me with sudden, intense clarity.
Then, he moved.
He didn't grab the Director. He didn't yell at Vanessa.
He walked up to the black SUV, reached through the open window, and pulled the keys out of the ignition. He tossed them into the decorative fountain by the stairs.
"You're not taking my son," Luca said quietly to Sterling. "And if you ever set foot on my property again, you won't leave it."
Sterling’s face flushed with rage. "You are making a terrible mistake, Moretti." She turned and marched down the driveway on foot.
Vanessa was hyperventilating. "Luca! I will make the call! I swear to God, I will freeze the account!"
"Do it," Luca said.
Vanessa pulled out her phone, her fingers shaking as she dialed. She put it on speaker.
"Yes, Mr. Vance?" a voice answered.
"Vance, freeze the Ohio account immediately," Vanessa ordered.
"I'm sorry, Miss Whitmore," the banker replied. "That account was emptied and closed twenty minutes ago."
Vanessa froze. "What?"
Luca stepped into the light. "Did you really think I didn't know what you were doing with my money, Vanessa?"
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver key.
"Pack your bags," Luca said. "You have ten minutes to leave my house."
Vanessa stared at the silver key, all the color draining from her face.
"Where did you get that?" she whispered.

"I found it," Luca said. "In the floorboards under Noah’s bed."
