Chapter 8 - THE CLINIC AT THE EDGE OF THE DOCKS

Luca didn't drop Vanessa. His grip tightened until her bloody smile faded into genuine panic.
"You think you hold the cards?" Luca whispered. "You have no idea what table you're sitting at."
He dropped her. Vanessa collapsed, gasping for air.
Luca turned to me. "Pier 42. Is that where your mother is?"
"Daniel hid her there," I said rapidly, pointing to the unconscious security chief on the floor. "He was the one who saved me twenty-six years ago. He moved Mom to protect her from the Whitmores."
Luca looked at Daniel’s body, his expression unreadable. Then he looked at Noah, who was trembling but safe.
"Lock her in the cellar," Luca yelled down the stairs to his arriving guards. They rushed up and dragged a kicking, screaming Vanessa away.
Luca grabbed my hand. "Let's go get your mother."
We left Noah with three armed guards in the safest room of the mansion. Ten minutes later, Luca’s armored SUV was tearing through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago.
I clutched the dashboard, my heart pounding against my ribs. "Vanessa said her father sent a hit squad. What if we're too late?"
"We aren't," Luca said, his eyes fixed on the road. "I own the docks. The Whitmores think they have power because they have money. Tonight, they learn the difference."
We skidded to a halt outside a rusted, unassuming warehouse at Pier 42. There were no hitmen. There were no fires.
Instead, there were six black SUVs surrounding the building, operated by men wearing the Moretti syndicate crest.
Luca killed the engine. "I made a phone call while we were running downstairs. Nobody touches my territory without my permission."
We rushed into the building. Inside, past the crates and pallets, was a sterile, fully equipped underground clinic.
And there, lying in a crisp white bed, hooked up to an IV, was my mother.
"Mom!" I sobbed, running to her side.
Eleanor Miller opened her eyes. She looked weak, but when she saw me, her face lit up with a warmth that completely shattered me.
"Grace," she whispered, reaching out a fragile hand.
I buried my face in her shoulder, crying uncontrollably. "You're safe. You're safe."
Luca stepped into the room. He took off his coat and stood at the foot of the bed.
My mother looked at him. She recognized him instantly. He had his biological mother's eyes.
"Luca," Eleanor said softly.
"Eleanor," Luca replied, bowing his head slightly in deep respect. "You saved my sister. You saved my family. I owe you a debt I can never repay."
"You don't owe me anything," Mom smiled weakly. "She is my daughter. She always will be."
"Always," I agreed, holding her hand tightly.
For a moment, there was peace. The nightmare was over. The Whitmores were defeated. My mother was safe. I finally knew who I was.
But as the clinic doctors came in to check Mom’s vitals, Luca stepped out into the hallway.
I followed him out to thank him.
But when I found him, he wasn't smiling. He was staring at a brown leather briefcase sitting on a medical cart. It belonged to the clinic’s head doctor.
The briefcase was open.
Inside, sitting on top of a stack of patient files, was a pearl bracelet.
It was identical to the one Vanessa wore every single day.
Luca looked at me, the color draining from his face.
"Grace," Luca whispered. "The Whitmores didn't send a hit squad to burn this place down."
"What do you mean?" I asked, panic rising again.
Luca picked up the pearl bracelet. "They sent the doctor. And they didn't come to kill your mother."
Before he could finish the sentence, an ear-splitting alarm echoed through the warehouse.

"They came to distract us," Luca roared, pulling his gun. "They went back to the mansion for Noah!"
