Chapter 10 - THE VELVET BOX IN THE COAT POCKET

I stared at the velvet box in Luca’s hand. The fabric was worn at the corners, aged by time and secrets.

"Luca... what is that?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

He didn't open it immediately. He ran his thumb over the top.

"When my mother fled Chicago, she didn't just take a train ticket," Luca explained. "She took a family heirloom. Something that belonged to my grandmother. She intended to give it to her daughter when she came of age."

My heart hammered against my ribs.

Luca pressed the latch, and the box snapped open.

Resting inside was a breathtaking vintage ring. A delicate sapphire surrounded by a halo of small, crushed diamonds, set in tarnished white gold. It wasn't loud or gaudy like the jewelry Vanessa wore. It was elegant. It had history.

"Daniel kept it," Luca said softly. "When Eleanor took you, Daniel took the ring from my mother’s belongings to ensure the Whitmores couldn't trace it. He gave it to me last night."

He lifted the ring from the velvet slit and held it out to me.

"This is your birthright, Grace. Welcome to the family."

Tears blurred my vision as I let him slide the cold metal onto my right hand. It fit perfectly. It felt like an anchor, grounding me to a past I never knew I had.

"Thank you," I choked out, throwing my arms around his neck.

Luca hugged me back tightly, a protective brotherly embrace that made me feel invincible.

"Okay, no more crying," Noah announced from the table, waving a paintbrush. "You're getting water on my picture."

We both laughed, pulling apart.

The day passed in a blur of healing. Movers came and cleared out the last of Vanessa’s extravagant furniture. The house felt lighter, breathing again.

That evening, as I was packing up my small room in the staff quarters to move into the guest suite, Daniel knocked on my door frame.

He looked much better, though a bandage still covered his temple.

"Miss Grace," he said formally.

"Just Grace, Daniel. Please."

He offered a small smile. "Luca requested your presence in the study. There is... a final matter of business to attend to."

I frowned, wiping dust off my jeans. "Business? I thought the Whitmores were handled."

"Vanessa and her father are in federal custody," Daniel confirmed. "But they left something behind. Something Luca believes you need to see."

I followed Daniel down the hall to the heavy oak doors of Luca’s private study.

Inside, the fire was roaring. Luca was sitting behind his massive desk, a glass of amber liquid in his hand.

Sitting in the chair opposite him was an older man. He was dressed in a rumpled suit, looking terrified and small.

It was Mr. Vance. The banker who had frozen my mother’s medical accounts.

"Grace," Luca said, gesturing to a chair beside Vance. "Please, sit."

I sat down, crossing my arms. I didn't feel sorry for the man sweating nervously beside me.

"Mr. Vance has been very cooperative today," Luca said smoothly. "He transferred all of Vanessa’s hidden assets back into the Moretti trust. But during the audit, he found a ledger."

Luca slid a heavy, leather-bound book across the desk.

"Open it," Luca instructed.

I pulled the book toward me. I flipped it open to the bookmarked page.

It was a list of payments. Huge, staggering sums of money, transferred over the last twenty years.

But it wasn't the numbers that caught my eye. It was the name at the top of the page.

Eleanor Miller.

I looked up, stunned. "These are payments made to my mother?"

"No," Luca said, his voice hardening. "Those are payments your mother made to the Whitmore family."

I stared at the page, the world tilting. "That's impossible. We were broke. Mom worked double shifts at the diner just to pay rent."

May you like

"She worked double shifts," Luca corrected gently, "because the Whitmores found her ten years ago. They have been extorting her ever since."
