Chapter 9 - THE BOY WHO FINALLY STAYED HOME

The drive back to the mansion was a blur of flashing lights and roaring engines. Luca drove like a man possessed, tires screaming as we tore through the iron gates.

We burst through the front doors.

The foyer was empty. The guards were gone.

"Noah!" Luca bellowed, his voice cracking with terror.

We rushed toward the grand staircase, but stopped dead in our tracks.

Sitting on the bottom step was Noah.

He was completely unharmed, eating a piece of leftover birthday cake from a silver plate.

Sitting next to him, holding an ice pack to the back of his head, was Daniel.

"Dad!" Noah cheered, standing up and running into Luca’s arms.

Luca dropped his gun and fell to his knees, crushing the boy to his chest. He buried his face in Noah’s hair, shaking with relief. "Are you okay? Did anyone hurt you?"

"No," Noah smiled. "Mr. Daniel woke up. When the bad men came, he locked the doors and made them go away."

Luca looked up at Daniel. The security chief looked battered, bleeding from his temple, but his eyes were steady.

"Whitmore’s men bypassed the outer gate," Daniel explained, wincing as he stood. "They thought with you gone, the house would be an easy target. They were wrong. The local police have them in custody."

Luca stood up, keeping Noah safely behind his leg. He walked up to Daniel.

For a terrifying second, I thought Luca might hit him for his past lies.

Instead, Luca extended his hand.

Daniel looked at it, surprised, before shaking it firmly.

"You protected my mother. You protected my sister. And tonight, you protected my son," Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. "You are family, Daniel. Always."

Daniel nodded, a small, grateful smile breaking through his stoic face.

The nightmare was truly over.

The next morning, the sun broke over Chicago, bathing the Moretti mansion in golden light.

Vanessa’s father had been arrested overnight on federal racketeering charges, thanks to the files Daniel had secretly compiled over the years. The Whitmore threat was permanently erased.

My mother was transferred to the best private hospital in the state, fully funded by the Moretti estate. Her prognosis was finally looking bright.

I walked into the kitchen, wearing my normal clothes instead of a maid’s apron.

Noah was sitting at the table, a brand new set of paints spread out in front of him. He was working on a new wooden frame.

"Hey, Aunt Grace," he grinned.

I smiled, my heart swelling. "Hey, buddy. What are you making?"

He held up the frame. He had painted it a bright, cheerful blue. In the center, instead of a picture, he had painted three figures holding hands. A tall man, a woman, and a little boy.

Across the bottom, in careful white letters, he had written: Our Family.

Luca walked into the kitchen, wearing a casual sweater instead of his usual tailored suits. He looked younger, lighter, the heavy burden of the mafia boss finally lifting off his shoulders.

He leaned over and kissed the top of Noah’s head. "That looks perfect, son."

He looked up at me. His dark eyes were soft, filled with a warmth that made my breath catch.

We had found each other in the darkest of circumstances, bound by secrets and blood. But as I stood in the sunlit kitchen with my brother and my nephew, I finally felt something I hadn't felt in a very long time.

I felt safe. I felt loved. I felt like I was exactly where I belonged.

Luca walked around the island and stood in front of me. He reached into his pocket.

"There's one more thing," Luca said softly.

He pulled out a small, worn velvet box.
