Chapter 11 - THE MECHANIC AND THE MAFIA KING

My father was seventy-seven years old. He complained about the price of milk, refused to pay for cable television, and loved his rusty 1998 Ford truck more than most people love their relatives.
He was not equipped to survive a cartel kidnapping.
"Where do they want to make the trade?" Luca asked, his voice instantly shifting from vulnerable to lethal.
"An abandoned rail yard on the south side," Michael answered, placing my father’s silver pocket watch on the desk. "Midnight. No cops. No backup. Or they kill him."
I stared at the watch. My hands went completely numb. "I have to go."
"You aren't going anywhere near them," Luca growled, grabbing his tactical vest.
"He is my father, Luca!" I screamed, the terror finally breaking my composure. "If I don't show up, they will execute him to send a message. I am making the trade."
Luca grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to look at him. His eyes were burning with a fierce, protective fire. "If you walk into that rail yard, they will kill him anyway, and they will take you. You don't know these people, Emily. I do."
"Then what do we do?" I sobbed, the tears finally falling.
Luca wiped a tear from my cheek with his thumb. "We do exactly what they asked. But we change the rules."
At 11:55 PM, I drove my sedan slowly into the sprawling, rusted maze of the abandoned south side rail yard.
The headlights cut through the fog, illuminating rows of decaying train cars.
I stopped the car in the center of the clearing and stepped out. I was entirely alone. Unarmed. Wearing my beige trench coat.
A heavy silence hung in the air, broken only by the crunch of gravel.
From the shadows between two boxcars, five men emerged. They were heavily armed, their faces covered by tactical masks.
The leader dragged a figure out of the darkness.
It was my dad.
His hands were zip-tied behind his back. He had a bruise on his cheek, but he was standing straight, glaring at the men holding him.
"Katie," my dad grunted, using my childhood nickname. "I told you not to come. I told these idiots my daughter is too smart to negotiate with thugs."
"Shut up, old man," the leader snapped, shoving a pistol into my father's ribs.
The leader looked at me. "You actually came alone. The nurse playing the martyr. How sweet."
"Let him go," I said, my voice remarkably steady. "You want me for the ledger. You have me. Let him walk away."
The leader laughed. "That's not how this works. We take you. And we leave him here in a shallow grave to remind the DeSantis family what happens when they cross us."
The leader raised his gun, pointing it at my father's head.
"No!" I screamed.
"Katie, close your eyes!" my dad yelled.
But before the leader could pull the trigger, a sharp, metallic clink echoed from the roof of the train car directly above them.
The cartel leader looked up.
A small, heavy metal canister bounced off the roof and landed directly at his feet.
Tear gas.
The canister erupted in a violent hiss of thick, blinding white chemical smoke.
"AMBUSH!" the leader screamed, coughing violently as the gas engulfed them.
From the darkness of the fog, shadows moved with terrifying speed.
Luca DeSantis didn't bring guns to a hostage exchange. He brought ghosts.
Michael Romano dropped from the roof of the boxcar, driving his boots directly into the shoulders of the cartel guard holding my father, crushing him to the gravel.
Before the leader could blindly fire his weapon through the smoke, a massive figure stepped out of the fog.
Luca grabbed the leader's gun hand, snapping the wrist with a brutal, sickening twist. The gun fell. Luca didn't hesitate; he drove his knee into the man's chest, dropping him instantly.
The remaining three cartel guards tried to run, but the heavy steel doors of the surrounding train cars suddenly slid open.
Dozens of Luca's heavily armed men stepped out, pinning the cartel guards in a circle of laser sights.
It was over in less than ten seconds.
Not a single shot was fired.
The smoke began to clear. I sprinted across the gravel.
"Dad!"
I fell to my knees, grabbing a pocket knife from Michael to cut the thick plastic zip-ties off my father's wrists.
My dad rubbed his wrists, coughing slightly from the residual gas. He looked at the cartel men groaning on the ground, then looked up at the towering, terrifying figure of Luca DeSantis standing over them.
"You the guy dating my daughter?" my dad asked gruffly.
Luca blinked, slightly taken aback by the old man's absolute lack of fear. The mafia boss managed a small, respectful smile. "Yes, sir. I am."
My dad grunted. "You're late. I've been tied up for three hours. And my truck is double-parked."
I let out a breathless, hysterical laugh, hugging my dad so tightly I thought his ribs might crack.
Luca walked over, offering his hand to my father. My dad looked at the blood on Luca's knuckles, then shook his hand firmly.
"Thank you," my dad said, his voice softening. "For keeping my little girl safe."
"She kept me safe first, Mr. Carter," Luca said quietly.
Luca turned to the cartel leader, who was writhing on the gravel, clutching his broken wrist.
Luca grabbed him by the collar, hauling him to his knees.
"Listen to me very carefully," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal promise. "You go back to your bosses. You tell them Luca DeSantis is fully awake. And you tell them that if anyone in the Carter family so much as catches a cold, I will burn your entire operation to the ground."
Luca threw the man back into the dirt. "Get out of my city."
The cartel men scrambled to their feet, disappearing into the fog like beaten dogs.
We walked back to my car. The adrenaline was fading, leaving me completely exhausted.
Luca opened the passenger door for my father.
"Mr. Carter, my men will drive you home. We'll have security at your house 24/7 until this completely blows over," Luca said.
My dad nodded, climbing into the car. "I still change my own oil, son. Don't send men who are afraid to get dirty."
Luca smiled. "I wouldn't dream of it."
I stood in the cold night air, looking at Luca. The violence was finally over. The threats were neutralized.
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out the small velvet box. He held it out to me.
May you like
"I believe we were interrupted," Luca said softly.
