Chapter 10 - THE BULLET IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR

The bullet shattered the windshield, missing my head by inches and burying itself into the passenger headrest.

I screamed, throwing the car into reverse and slamming the gas pedal. The tires shrieked against the asphalt, but before I could spin the wheel, a black SUV slammed violently into my rear bumper, pinning me in the driveway.

Two men jumped out of the SUV, guns drawn.

David Miller walked slowly toward my driver’s side window, his gun still raised. The man whose life I had saved twenty years ago looked entirely dead behind the eyes.

"I'm sorry, Emily," David said, his voice hollow. "I really am."

Before he could fire a second shot, the massive front doors of the DeSantis mansion blew open.

Luca didn't run out. He erupted.

He held an assault rifle, firing a deafening barrage of suppressing fire over David's head, shattering the windows of the black SUV.

David dove behind my car for cover. The two armed men returned fire, but they were instantly outmatched. Michael Romano and four estate guards poured out of the house, flanking the driveway with tactical precision.

"Drop it, Miller!" Luca roared, his voice cutting through the gunfire like thunder. "Drop the weapon or I cut you in half!"

David hesitated. Then, slowly, he tossed his gun onto the driveway and raised his hands. The two men with him did the same.

Luca marched forward, grabbing David by the collar and throwing him brutally against the hood of my car.

"Give me one reason I don't put a bullet through your skull right now," Luca snarled, pressing the hot barrel of the rifle under David's chin.

I kicked my door open, my hands shaking violently. "Luca, wait! Let him speak!"

Luca didn't lower the gun, but he turned his furious eyes toward me. "He just tried to kill you, Emily!"

"I know," I breathed, staring at David. "David... why? The Board is destroyed. Arthur Vance is in federal custody. It's over."

David let out a broken, pathetic laugh. "You think Arthur Vance was the top of the food chain, Emily? The Board was just a corporate front. The people who really funded the blue pill trials... they aren't businessmen. They're cartel."

My blood ran cold.

"When Arthur went down," David choked out, "the cartel lost billions in research. They bought my precinct years ago. They told me if I didn't eliminate the nurse who leaked the ledger, they would slaughter my wife and daughters."

David looked at me, tears streaming down his face. "I had to choose, Emily. My family... or you."

Luca’s expression hardened. He didn't show an ounce of pity. "You chose wrong."

Luca raised the rifle.

"NO!" I yelled, stepping between Luca and David.

"Emily, move," Luca commanded.

"If you shoot him, you are no better than the people who tried to destroy your family!" I yelled, refusing to back down. "He was forced into an impossible choice, Luca! Just like Celeste. Just like Sofia. The cartel broke him!"

Luca stared at me. The absolute fury in his eyes fought a violent war against the profound respect he had for me.

Slowly, agonizingly, Luca lowered the rifle.

"Get him inside," Luca ordered Michael. "Lock him in the basement."

Thirty minutes later, the mansion was a fortress. Every guard was heavily armed. The steel shutters were drawn.

I sat in the library, shaking uncontrollably. The adrenaline crash was brutal. I had survived the hospital fire, the Geneva vault, the Board's assassins. But being shot at by a man I had saved... it broke something inside me.

Luca walked into the room carrying two glasses of scotch. He handed me one and sat down heavily in the leather chair across from me.

"Drink," he said gently.

I took a sip. It burned, but it helped steady my hands.

"The cartel isn't going to stop, Emily," Luca said quietly. "They don't care about the ledger anymore. They care about retaliation. They want to make an example out of you."

"I know," I whispered. "I have to run. Change my name. Disappear."

Luca leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. He looked directly into my eyes, and for the first time, I didn't see the mafia boss. I just saw the man.

"You aren't running anywhere," Luca said. "You saved my mother. You saved my daughters. You gave me my mind back."

"Luca, I can't stay here. I'll put your family in danger."

"My family is danger, Emily," he smiled grimly. "The cartel wants a war? Fine. I will give them a war that will make the streets of Chicago run red."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He placed it on the table between us.

"But if you stay," Luca said softly, "you don't stay as a nurse."

I stared at the box. My breath hitched.

"Luca... what is this?"

He didn't answer. He just opened it.

Inside was a simple, breathtaking diamond ring.

"I don't know how to do this normally," Luca said, his voice vulnerable for the first time since I met him. "My life is chaos. My world is violent. But the only time I feel completely clear... is when you are in the room."

I looked at the ring, then at him. "Luca, I'm just a nurse who mows her own lawn."

"And I'm just a man who needs someone strong enough to tell him when he's wrong," Luca smiled.

Before I could answer, the heavy library doors burst open.

Michael Romano stood in the doorway, his face pale.

"Luca," Michael breathed. "The cartel didn't just send David. They sent a strike team to Emily's father's house."

My heart stopped.

"My dad?" I gasped.

"He's alive," Michael said quickly. "But they took him. And they left a message."

Michael held up a small, silver pocket watch.

My father's watch.

May you like

"They want a trade," Michael said grimly. "Emily for her father."
