Chapter 12 - THE NURSE WHO SAVED THE KING

I looked at the velvet box in Luca's hand.
The fog rolled through the abandoned rail yard, wrapping around us in the quiet aftermath of the chaos.
"Luca," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "My life has been perfectly predictable for forty-four years. I work twelve-hour shifts. I eat dinner over the sink. I check my dad's blood pressure on Sundays."
I stepped closer to him, looking up into his dark, intense eyes.
"In the last forty-eight hours, I've smashed a lawyer's wrist, survived a hospital explosion, robbed a police station, and watched a cartel get dismantled in a rail yard."
Luca’s expression softened, a hint of sadness touching his eyes. He slowly lowered his hand, preparing to close the box.
"I understand, Emily," Luca said quietly. "It's too much. I brought darkness into your life. You deserve peace."
I reached out and grabbed his hand before he could close the lid.
"I wasn't finished," I said, a small smile breaking across my face.
Luca froze, looking down at me.
"My life was predictable," I whispered. "But it was also lonely. I spent my entire career saving people, but I always went home to an empty house. I thought that was just how my story went."
I took the small velvet box from his hand. I opened it, looking at the breathtaking diamond ring inside.
"You didn't bring darkness into my life, Luca," I said, looking up at him. "You brought a family. You brought Grace, Sofia, Leo, and a mother who is way too smart for her own good. You brought a man who will literally fight an army to protect the people he loves."
I took the ring out of the box and handed it to him.
"Put it on my finger," I whispered.
Luca DeSantis, the man who never hesitated in the face of death, hesitated now. His hands actually trembled as he took the ring and slid it onto my finger. It fit perfectly.
He pulled me into his arms, kissing me with a fierce, desperate passion that wiped away every ounce of fear I had left.
Six months later.
The DeSantis estate was alive with laughter.
It was a Sunday afternoon in early spring. The massive backyard was bathed in warm sunlight, filled with the smell of a massive Italian barbecue.
Rose was sitting on the patio, wearing sunglasses and holding a glass of iced tea, directing the landscaping crew with ruthless efficiency.
Grace and Sofia were sitting together on a picnic blanket, laughing hysterically at a joke Michael Romano had just told. Sofia looked completely transformed. The haunted look in her eyes was gone, replaced by a bright, vibrant joy.
Little Leo was running across the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Luca had bought him for his seventh birthday.
And sitting on a lawn chair, holding a plate of ribs, was my stubborn father. He was currently explaining to one of Luca's heavily tattooed security guards how to properly replace a carburetor on a 1998 Ford. The guard was nodding respectfully, terrified to interrupt him.
I stood on the balcony, watching them all.
I was wearing my nursing scrubs. Some things never change.
Luca walked out onto the balcony, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder.
"You're supposed to be off the clock today, Mrs. DeSantis," Luca murmured, kissing my neck.
"Old habits," I smiled, leaning back against his chest. "Besides, your mother's blood pressure needs checking."
"My mother will outlive us all out of pure spite," Luca laughed softly.
He turned me around, looking into my eyes. The silver at his temples made him look distinguished, deeply calm, and finally at peace.
"No more blue pills," Luca whispered.
"No more secrets," I replied, tracing the line of his jaw.
"Just us."
I looked out over the yard. I saw the daughter who was returned from the dead. The mother who had faked madness to save her bloodline. The mechanic who wasn't afraid of the mob.
And I looked at the man holding me.
I was forty-four years old. A registered nurse. And a wife.
I had walked into a mafia boss's house to take a pulse, and I had ended up healing a broken empire.

I smiled, pulling Luca down for a kiss as the sun set over the city.
The king finally had his memory back. But this time, he had a queen who knew exactly how to keep him alive.
