Chapter 4 - THE POCKET WATCH

"It was my mother's!" I cried out, stepping back from the terrifying fury in Adrian's eyes.
"Your mother?" Adrian sneered. "My wife, Isabella, was murdered in a secure VIP suite at Chicago General Hospital. Nobody went in or out. The only thing missing was that bracelet. And now it’s on the wrist of my maid."
He signaled his remaining guards.
"Take her to my study," Adrian ordered. "Don't let her out of your sight."
"Adrian, please!" I begged, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "My mother was a nurse! She worked at Chicago General! I'm not a thief!"
Adrian didn't listen.
He turned away, carrying a trembling Leo out of the ruined dining room.
Two guards grabbed my arms, ignoring my bleeding foot, and dragged me down the long, luxurious hallway toward the master study.
They shoved me inside and locked the heavy oak doors behind me.
I fell onto the leather sofa, clutching my foot, sobbing into my hands.
Everything was falling apart. I had saved his son. I had exposed a traitor. And now, the most dangerous man in the city thought I was connected to his wife's murder.
Thirty minutes passed.
The door clicked open.
Adrian walked in alone.
He had taken off his suit jacket. His tie was loosened. He looked exhausted, but his eyes were still hard as stone.
In his hand, he held an old, vintage gold pocket watch.
He sat in the leather armchair across from me.
"My men ran a deep background check on you in the last twenty minutes," Adrian said quietly. "Your real name is Natalie Brooks. Your mother was Elena Brooks. An overnight cardiac nurse at Chicago General."
"Yes," I sniffled, wiping my face.
"She died four years ago," Adrian continued, reading from a file on his phone. "A hit-and-run accident. Three days after my wife was murdered."
My breath caught.
"It was an accident," I whispered. "The police said it was a drunk driver."
"There are no accidents in this city," Adrian said coldly.
He clicked the gold pocket watch open.
"Tell me about the bracelet."
Answer One: My mother wasn't just a random nurse. She was Isabella Lorenzo's nurse on the night she was killed.
Open Two: Why did Isabella give my mother the priceless bracelet? And who killed my mother three days later?
"My mother came home terrified that night," I said, my voice shaking. "She was crying. She told me she had a patient... a beautiful woman who was very sick. The woman knew she was going to die. But she didn't die from her illness."
Adrian’s jaw tightened. "Go on."
"My mother saw someone go into the room," I confessed. "She hid in the supply closet. She watched a man inject something into the woman's IV."
Adrian gripped the arms of his chair so hard the leather creaked.
"Did she see his face?"
"No. He was wearing a surgical mask. But after he left, my mother rushed into the room. It was too late. The woman was dying. But before she passed... she took off her bracelet."
I touched the silver vines on my wrist.
"She forced it into my mother's hand. She told my mother to run. She said the bracelet was the key."
"The key to what?" Adrian demanded.
"I don't know!" I cried. "My mother hid it. Three days later, she was run off the road. I found the bracelet hidden inside my childhood teddy bear a month after the funeral."
Adrian stared at me.
He looked down at the gold pocket watch in his hand.
"My wife didn't trust me at the end," Adrian whispered, tracing the edge of the watch. "She knew there was a traitor in my inner circle, but she didn't know who. She told me if anything ever happened to her, I needed to find the emerald."
He stood up and walked over to me.
"Take it off."
I unclasped the silver bracelet and handed it to him.
Adrian took the pocket watch and popped open the back casing.
Inside, there was a small, circular indentation.
He placed the emerald centerpiece of the bracelet directly into the back of the watch.
It fit perfectly.
With a soft mechanical click, the face of the pocket watch sprang open, revealing a hidden micro-SD card tucked behind the clock hands.
Reversal: The bracelet wasn't just jewelry. It was the physical key to Isabella’s secret insurance policy.
Adrian pulled the tiny memory card out.
But before he could insert it into his laptop, the entire mansion shuddered.
A massive explosion echoed from the front gates.
The windows of the study rattled violently. The power instantly cut out, plunging the room into darkness. Emergency red lights flickered on a second later.
An alarm began to scream through the hallways.
Adrian drew his weapon in a fraction of a second.
His radio crackled to life.
"Boss!" the security chief yelled through the static. "The perimeter is breached! Three armored SUVs just drove through the front gates. Heavily armed mercenaries. They're flooding the ground floor!"
"The Morettis," Adrian gritted his teeth. "Julian must have sent a signal before we knocked him out."
"They have us pinned down!" the guard yelled.
Then, a new voice came over the radio frequency.
It was calm. Arrogant.
"Good evening, Adrian."
Adrian froze. "Silvio Moretti."
"Your brother made a deal," Silvio’s voice echoed through the static. "But since Julian has failed, I'm here to collect my prize personally."
"You aren't getting a dime of my money, Silvio," Adrian growled.
"I don't want the money, Adrian," Silvio laughed. "I want the girl."

My blood ran completely cold.
"Send out the maid," Silvio demanded. "Send out Natalie Brooks. Or we kill everyone inside the house, starting with your son."
