Chapter 5 - THE VELVET COAT

"Send out the maid."

The words hung in the red emergency lighting of the study, heavy and suffocating.

I backed away from Adrian, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Why do they want me?" I gasped, panic rising in my throat.

Answer One: The Morettis didn't just want Adrian's money. They were specifically hunting me because I possessed Isabella's bracelet.

Open Two: What was on the micro-SD card that terrified a rival mafia family enough to wage an all-out war?

Adrian didn't look at me. He stared at the radio, his jaw locked tight.

"You aren't taking anyone from my house, Silvio," Adrian spoke into the radio, his voice a low, lethal rumble.

"We have forty men, Adrian," Silvio chuckled. "You have ten surviving guards. You have three minutes to send her out the front door, or we burn the estate to the ground."

The radio clicked off.

Adrian shoved the micro-SD card into his pocket. He turned to me.

"Can you walk?"

"My foot—"

"I didn't ask if it hurts," Adrian interrupted, his eyes fierce. "I asked if you can walk."

I swallowed hard and nodded. "Yes."

"Good. Because we aren't waiting to burn."

He grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the heavy oak bookcase at the back of the study. He reached behind a row of leather-bound encyclopedias and pulled a hidden lever.

The bookcase clicked and swung inward, revealing a narrow, pitch-black corridor smelling of old dust and damp stone.

"The servant passages," Adrian said. "Built during prohibition. Nobody knows the full layout except me."

"I know them," I whispered.

Adrian looked at me in surprise.

"I clean this house, Mr. Lorenzo," I said quickly. "I know every hidden door, every loose floorboard, every blind spot the cameras can't see."

A flicker of respect crossed Adrian's face.

"Then lead the way to the nursery. We need to get Leo."

We slipped into the darkness. I ignored the agonizing burn in my foot, navigating the narrow wooden steps completely by touch.

We bypassed the second-floor hallway, hearing the heavy boots of Moretti's men storming the guest rooms above us. Gunfire echoed through the walls as Adrian's remaining guards fought desperately to hold them back.

We reached the hidden panel behind the nursery.

I pressed the latch, and we spilled into the dimly lit room.

Leo was hiding inside his wooden toy chest, clutching his bear, trembling violently.

"Leo," Adrian rushed forward, scooping the boy into his arms. "I've got you. Stay quiet, buddy."

Leo buried his face in Adrian's neck, not making a sound.

"We need to get to the panic room in the sub-basement," Adrian whispered to me. "Lead us down."

I nodded, moving back toward the hidden panel.

But as I stepped into the dark corridor, my foot kicked something soft lying on the dusty floorboards.

I shined the small flashlight on my phone downward.

It was a heavy, dark red velvet coat.

It looked expensive. Custom tailored.

"What is that?" Adrian asked, keeping his gun raised toward the shadows.

I stared at the coat, my breath catching in my throat.

I reached down and touched the fabric.

I recognized it.

"This coat," I whispered, my hands starting to shake. "The man who killed my mother... the drunk driver. I saw him running from his crashed car before the police arrived. He was wearing this exact coat."

Adrian looked at the velvet fabric, his eyes narrowing.

"That’s a custom piece from a tailor in Naples," Adrian said, his voice dropping. "Only one man in Chicago wears that specific cut."

"Who?"

"Marcus."

Reversal: The drunk driver who murdered my mother wasn't a random stranger. It was Marcus Vale, Adrian's security chief.

"Marcus killed my mother?" I gasped, the realization hitting me like a physical blow.

Answer One: Marcus had hunted down the nurse who witnessed Isabella's murder.

Open Two: But why was Marcus's coat hidden inside the secret servant passages?

"He was using the passages," Adrian realized, his eyes widening in horror. "Marcus knew about the hidden corridors. He didn't just sell us out to the Morettis. He let them inside."

Suddenly, the wooden wall beside us splintered.

Bullets tore through the plaster, missing Adrian's head by inches.

"They're in the walls!" Adrian yelled, shielding Leo. "Run!"

I didn't need to be told twice.

I limped as fast as I could down the narrow, winding staircase, the sounds of shouting and gunfire chasing us through the dark.

We burst into the sub-basement, a cavernous space filled with old wine racks and rusted pipes.

At the far end was the heavy steel door of the panic room.

"Open it!" Adrian yelled, laying down suppressive fire as three Moretti mercenaries spilled into the basement behind us.

I rushed to the keypad, my hands slick with sweat.

I punched in the emergency code Adrian shouted over the gunfire.

The heavy steel bolts slammed back.

I pulled the door open, shoving Leo inside.

Adrian fired twice more, dropping one of the mercenaries, before diving into the panic room with me.

I slammed the steel door shut, spinning the heavy locking wheel just as bullets sparked against the outside metal.

We were safe. Temporarily.

The panic room was brightly lit, stocked with monitors, weapons, and medical supplies.

Adrian leaned against the steel wall, panting heavily.

He set Leo down gently on a cot.

Then, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the micro-SD card.

He walked over to the secure laptop on the metal desk and inserted it.

"Let's see what you died for, Isabella," Adrian whispered.

I stood beside him, watching the screen load.

A video file popped up.

Adrian clicked play.

The grainy footage showed Isabella, pale and weak, lying in her hospital bed.

But she wasn't alone.

A man in a surgical mask was standing over her, holding a syringe.

But the camera angle caught his reflection in the room's mirror.

The mask was pulled down.

I gasped.

Adrian stopped breathing.

It wasn't Marcus.

It wasn't Julian.

It was Silvio Moretti himself.

May you like

But that wasn't the worst part.

Standing in the corner of the hospital room, watching Silvio inject the poison, holding the door shut, was Adrian's own father.
