Chapter 6 - THE FADED PHOTOGRAPH

The video continued to play in terrible, silent clarity.
Adrian’s father, Don Carlo Lorenzo, the legendary patriarch of the family, stood casually by the door while the head of the rival family murdered his daughter-in-law.
Adrian stared at the screen, his face completely devoid of color.
"My father," Adrian whispered, the words choking in his throat. "My father let him do it."
Answer One: The war between the Lorenzos and the Morettis was a lie. Adrian's father had conspired with the enemy to eliminate Isabella.
Open Two: Why would Carlo Lorenzo want his own daughter-in-law dead?
The video ended. A second file opened automatically on the screen.
It was a scanned document. A DNA test.
I looked at the names on the screen.
Isabella Lorenzo.
Leo Lorenzo.
Carlo Lorenzo.
The results at the bottom were highlighted in bright red.
Probability of relation between Carlo Lorenzo and Leo Lorenzo: 0.0%
Adrian gripped the edge of the metal desk so hard his knuckles turned white.
"Leo isn't a Lorenzo," Adrian breathed.
Reversal: Isabella hadn't been murdered because she was a liability to the business. She was murdered because she had an affair, and Leo was not Adrian's biological son.
"My father found out," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly dead. "He cared about bloodlines more than anything. He couldn't kill a child. But he wouldn't let Isabella live to shame the family name. So he let the Morettis do it, in exchange for giving up the shipping ports."
He looked at Leo, who was sitting quietly on the cot, hugging his bear.
Adrian’s expression didn't harden. It shattered.
He walked over, dropped to his knees, and pulled the little boy into a fierce, desperate hug.
"You are my son," Adrian cried into Leo's hair. "Blood doesn't matter. You are my son."
I watched them, tears streaming down my face. I finally understood why Adrian was so different from the other mafia bosses. He loved his family more than the empire.
Suddenly, a heavy, metallic bang echoed against the panic room door.
The monitors on the desk flickered, showing the hallway outside.
Silvio Moretti stood in front of the camera, holding a heavy breaching charge.
And standing next to him was Marcus.
"Adrian," Marcus's voice came through the intercom. "Your father promised me your seat when he died. But he didn't expect you to be so stubborn. Give up the maid. Give up the memory card. And I'll let you and the bastard child walk away."
Adrian stood up, his grief instantly hardening back into lethal resolve.
"They're going to blow the door," Adrian said, rushing to the weapons rack. He tossed me a heavy bulletproof vest. "Put this on."
"I don't know how to shoot," I said, my hands shaking as I strapped the heavy Kevlar over my torn maid's uniform.
"You don't have to," Adrian said, loading a tactical shotgun. "You just have to keep Leo safe."
He walked over to a small, metal filing cabinet in the corner of the panic room.
"If I don't make it out of here, Natalie," Adrian said, unlocking the bottom drawer. "There is a secret exit grate beneath the floorboards. It leads to the city sewer system. You take Leo, you take this envelope, and you disappear."
He handed me a thick, brown manila envelope.
It was heavy, filled with banded stacks of cash and fake passports.
But as he handed it to me, a small, faded photograph slipped out and fluttered to the floor.
I bent down and picked it up.
I stared at it.
My heart stopped completely.
It was a picture of my mother, Elena.
She was younger, smiling, sitting on a park bench.
But she wasn't alone.
She was sitting next to Adrian's father, Carlo Lorenzo.
His arm was wrapped affectionately around her waist.
"What is this?" I gasped, holding the photo up.
Adrian looked at it, confused. "I don't know. That envelope was my father's emergency stash. I just found it after he died last year."
Answer One: My mother didn't just happen to be Isabella's nurse. She was placed there by Carlo Lorenzo.
But why?
I flipped the photograph over.
On the back, written in Carlo Lorenzo's distinct, cursive handwriting, were four words.
My beautiful daughter, Elena.
The room spun. The breath was knocked out of my lungs.
My mother wasn't just a nurse.
She was Carlo Lorenzo's illegitimate daughter.
Which meant...
Reversal: I wasn't just a maid. I was Adrian Lorenzo's niece.
"Natalie?" Adrian asked, seeing the shock on my face. "What is it?"
Before I could answer, a massive, deafening explosion ripped through the room.
The heavy steel door of the panic room blew inward, flying off its hinges in a cloud of smoke and fire.

The concussive wave threw me backward into the metal desk. I hit my head hard, my vision blurring into darkness.
The last thing I heard was the sound of heavy boots walking into the room, and Leo screaming.
