Chapter 9 - THE EMERALD HEIRLOOM

I woke up to the smell of expensive lilies and sterile cotton.

I didn't open my eyes immediately. I just lay there, feeling the soft, luxurious mattress beneath me. The agonizing pain in my foot and shoulder was gone, replaced by a dull, medicated ache.

I slowly blinked my eyes open.

I wasn't in a hospital.

I was in the master guest suite of the Lorenzo estate. The walls were painted a soft cream, bathed in warm, golden afternoon sunlight pouring through massive bay windows.

Sitting in a plush armchair beside my bed was Adrian.

He looked different. The hard, terrifying edge of the mafia boss was gone. He wore a simple black sweater, reading a leather-bound book.

He looked up, sensing I was awake.

A genuine, deeply relieved smile broke across his face.

"You've been asleep for four days," Adrian said softly, setting the book down and walking over to the bed.

"Four days?" I croaked. My throat was dry.

Adrian poured a glass of water from a silver pitcher and held the straw to my lips. I drank greedily.

"The surgery was successful," Adrian explained, pulling up a chair closer to me. "The bullet missed your artery. My personal doctors have been monitoring you around the clock."

I looked around the beautiful room.

"What happened to Silvio?" I asked.

"Silvio is in federal custody," Adrian said, his voice calm. "The memory card you saved contained enough evidence to put the entire Moretti family away for life. The war is over."

"And Victoria?" I asked, remembering the train tickets.

Adrian's eyes darkened for a fraction of a second. "Victoria was intercepted in Paris before she could board a flight. She won't be returning to the family. Ever."

He reached out and gently rested his large, warm hand over mine.

"You saved my empire, Natalie. You saved my son. And you saved me."

"I was just doing my job," I whispered.

"You aren't a maid anymore," Adrian said firmly.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a long, flat velvet box.

He opened it.

Inside, resting on black satin, was the emerald centerpiece from Isabella's bracelet.

But it wasn't a bracelet anymore. Adrian had taken the priceless jewel and had it reset into a stunning, delicate silver necklace.

"My father was a monster," Adrian said quietly. "He destroyed your mother's life to protect his secrets. He denied you your birthright. I cannot change the past. But I can protect our future."

Adrian leaned forward and gently clasped the silver chain around my neck.

The cool emerald rested directly over my heart.

"This belongs to you," Adrian whispered. "It is the Lorenzo family heirloom. And you are a Lorenzo. You will never scrub another floor. You will never hide in the shadows. You have a seat at the table, as my niece, and as a leader of this family."

Tears welled in my eyes. For the first time in my entire twenty-eight years, I wasn't fighting to survive. I wasn't hiding a bleeding foot. I wasn't invisible.

I had a family.

"Thank you," I cried, wiping my cheeks.

Suddenly, the heavy bedroom doors pushed open.

Leo ran into the room.

He was wearing a bright red sweater, carrying a tray of awkwardly arranged cookies and a glass of milk.

When he saw I was awake, his face lit up with pure, unadulterated joy.

He practically threw the tray onto the bedside table and scrambled up onto the massive bed.

He threw his small arms around my neck, burying his face in my uninjured shoulder.

"You're awake," Leo whispered clearly, his voice sweet and steady.

I wrapped my good arm around him, pulling him tight against me, burying my face in his hair. He smelled like vanilla and safety.

"I'm awake, baby," I whispered back.

Adrian watched us, standing by the window with the sunlight catching his dark hair. The burden of the empire had lifted from his shoulders. He wasn't a ruthless Don looking for traitors anymore. He was just a father, looking at his family.

Leo pulled back slightly, looking at the emerald necklace resting on my chest.

He reached out and traced it with his small finger.

Then he looked up at me, his dark eyes filled with absolute trust.

"Are you staying forever?" Leo asked.

I looked at Adrian, who smiled and nodded.

May you like

I looked back at the little boy who had spoken his first words to save my life.

"Yes," I said, kissing his forehead. "I'm staying forever."
