Chapter 7 - THE WOODEN ROSARY

The ringing in my ears was absolute.

Smoke filled the panic room, stinging my eyes and throat.

I pushed myself up onto my elbows, fighting a wave of nausea. The Kevlar vest had absorbed the worst of the impact against the desk, but my head was throbbing violently.

Through the thick gray smoke, I saw silhouettes moving.

Adrian was on the floor, pinned beneath a fallen metal storage rack. He was bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, struggling desperately to reach his dropped shotgun.

Standing over him, holding an assault rifle, was Marcus.

And in the corner, Silvio Moretti had grabbed Leo by the arm. The little boy was kicking and crying silently, his terrified eyes locked on his father.

"I told you, Adrian," Marcus sneered, kicking the shotgun out of Adrian's reach. "You were too soft to run this empire. Your father knew it. That's why he trusted me."

"You're a dead man, Marcus," Adrian ground out, trying to lift the heavy steel rack off his crushed leg.

"Not today," Marcus laughed.

I was lying in the shadows behind the overturned desk. They hadn't noticed I was conscious.

My hand brushed against the faded photograph still lying on the floor.

My beautiful daughter, Elena.

I was a Lorenzo.

Carlo Lorenzo had used my mother to monitor Isabella. And when my mother realized Carlo was going to let Isabella die, she tried to save her. She took the bracelet. And Carlo ordered Marcus to kill his own daughter in that hit-and-run to cover it up.

A cold, terrifying rage replaced the fear in my veins.

I wasn't a scared maid anymore. I was blood.

I looked around the floor near the desk.

Adrian's backup weapon, a heavy silver handgun, had slid under the chair during the explosion.

I slowly reached out, my fingers trembling, and grabbed the cold metal grip.

"Give me the memory card, Adrian," Silvio ordered, dragging Leo closer to the door. "And the Morettis leave in peace. You keep the boy. We take the city."

"Go to hell," Adrian spat.

Silvio sighed, pulling a revolver from his coat and pointing it at Leo's head. "Wrong answer."

I didn't hesitate.

I pushed myself up over the edge of the desk, raised the heavy handgun with both hands, and pulled the trigger.

The gunshot deafened the small room.

The bullet struck Silvio Moretti perfectly in the shoulder.

He screamed, dropping his revolver and releasing Leo.

"Run, Leo!" I screamed.

Leo darted across the room, diving under the heavy steel desk beside me.

Marcus spun around, raising his assault rifle toward me.

But Adrian used the distraction. With a roar of pure adrenaline, he heaved the metal rack off his leg, lunged forward, and tackled Marcus to the concrete floor.

The two men engaged in a brutal, bloody fistfight.

Silvio was writhing on the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder. He reached for his dropped revolver.

I stepped out from behind the desk, limping on my ruined foot, and kicked the gun across the room.

I aimed my weapon directly at Silvio's chest.

"You killed my mother," I said, my voice shaking with rage.

Silvio looked up at me, his face pale with pain and shock. "Who are you?"

"I'm Elena's daughter," I said.

Silvio's eyes widened in realization. "Carlo's bastard granddaughter. You survived."

Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the room.

I turned.

Adrian had pinned Marcus to the wall.

But Marcus had pulled a hidden combat knife. He drove the blade deep into Adrian's side.

Adrian gasped, stumbling backward, clutching his ribs. Blood immediately soaked his white dress shirt.

Marcus stood up, panting, wiping blood from his mouth. He looked at Adrian, then at me holding the gun on Silvio.

Marcus reached into his pocket.

He didn't pull out a gun.

He pulled out a simple, wooden rosary.

Answer One: Marcus wasn't fighting for money or power. He was fighting a holy war.

He held the rosary up.

"Do you know what this is, Adrian?" Marcus spat. "Your father left this on my mother's body after he ordered her killed thirty years ago. A mafia calling card. I swore I would tear your family apart from the inside. I played the loyal dog for two decades to get close enough."

Open Two: If Marcus hated Carlo Lorenzo, why did he kill my mother for him?

"You killed Elena," Adrian choked out, leaning against the wall, bleeding heavily. "Carlo’s daughter. You did his dirty work."

Reversal: Marcus smiled, a sick, twisted expression.

"I didn't kill her for Carlo," Marcus said. "I killed her to torture him. Carlo loved Elena. She was the only thing he truly cared about. When I ran her off the road, I watched Carlo's heart break. It was beautiful."

Marcus dropped the rosary on the floor.

He raised his assault rifle, aiming directly at Adrian’s head.

"And now, I end the Lorenzo line."

May you like

I didn't think.

I threw myself across the room, diving directly between Marcus and Adrian just as Marcus pulled the trigger.
